Massachusetts Public Library Trustees Handbook
The research, writing and production of the Trustee Handbook reflect a long history of successful collaboration between the Massachusetts Library Trustees Association and the Board of Library Commissioners. Their first handbook was published in 1977 and underwent a major revision in 1988. In the past two years, a small and persevering Committee of trustees, librarians and Commission staff have worked with diligence and competence to produce an up-to-date work of reference.
Today's edition includes significant developments which have ocurred over the past decade. There are new sections on technology and construction. Both of these developments are importantly affecting the public library's role and place in your community. While changes have been noted, the handbook has retained those principles and practices which over the years have stood the test of time for their relevance and guidance.
The structure of the handbook is designed to facilitate selective reading for information as needed, as each major category is largely complete in itself. Finally, I would recommend that should you need additional or clarifying information, please contact the Commission's Public Library Advisory Unit. They are there to help.
