Friends and Trustee Conference Announced
The Massachusetts Friends of Libraries and the Massachusetts Library Trustees Association are co-sponsoring the 17th annual Friends and Trustee conference on Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at the Worcester Technical High School. The conference provides participants an opportunity to learn about and discuss issues affecting the Commonwealth's libraries including advocacy, marketing, eBooks, museum pass programs and more.
The keynote address, Baby Boomers-Engaging a powerful Support Group, will be presented by Beth Nawalinski, Director of Marketing and Communications at United for Libraries: The Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends and Foundations (ALTAFF). She is also the co-author 101+ Great Ideas for Libraries and Friends and Even More Great Ideas for Libraries and Friends.

Friends and Baby Boomers - Getting New Active Members for Your Group
Beth Nawalinski will discuss ways to attract and retain baby boomer volunteers while ensuring that the group will remain strong and viable long into the future.
Jack Donohue will provide an update on the important news in eBook so that you can make better informed decisions about what your library should do. The ALA’s report “EBook Business Models for Public Libraries” and their digital rights management (DRM) tip sheet will be discussed.
Panelists from three libraries (Paul Trunnell, Cambridge Public Library; Sarah Hubbell, Wayland; Deborah Dutra, Taunton Public Library) describe their Museum Pass programs and open discussion for audience input. Topics include how passes are chosen, how they are booked, how use is counted and policies regarding the borrowing of passes. Please bring your own stories and handouts to share with others in attendance.
Advocacy for Trustees; Take Action! Build Community Support
Presented by Nancy Rea, this program will focus on the tools and skills that create an easy 3-level approach to building local support for your library. Nancy will provide the formal tools and guide you through practical exercises to develop your message and advocacy plan.
Advocacy for Friends; Take Action! Build Community Support
Finding out who the decision makers are; focus on “real people” and involve them in a cause; advocacy should be done all year, and not in a moment of crisis John Ramsay and Eric Poulin, Western MA Advocates, will provide real-life successes and challenges they have faced while building advocacy in their local communities and help participants learn ways to build local support for the library. Their presentation will also include some time for participants to share some of their advocacy stories.
Intellectual Freedom for Trustees
Presented by Beth Nawalinski, this session covers meeting room policies, book challenges, policies, events and awareness (Banned Books Week), etc. Intellectual Freedom is a hot topic for Trustees and one about which ALTAFF receives a large number of questions. ALTAFF is introducing a fee-based webinar on the topic in late September/early October.
The Board of Library Commissioners (mass.gov/mblc) is the agency of state government with the statutory authority and responsibility to organize, develop, coordinate and improve library services throughout the Commonwealth. The Board advises municipalities and library trustees on the operation and maintenance of public libraries, including construction and renovation. It administers state and federal grant programs for libraries and promotes cooperation among all types of libraries through regional library systems and automated resource sharing. It also works to ensure that all residents of the Commonwealth, regardless of their geographic location, social or economic status, age, level of physical or intellectual ability or cultural background, have access to essential new electronic information technologies and significant electronic databases.
