Establishing and maintaining relationships between your organization and Responders has many positive results for both parties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many years, COSTEP MA has worked to enhance the partnerships among these communities, through workshops, networking, advocacy, and developing materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:left\"><strong><em>Federal<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Federal Emergency Management Agency&#8217;s (FEMA)<\/strong> mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure  that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our  capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from,  and mitigate all hazards. The range of FEMA\u2019s activities is broad and  spans the life cycle of disasters.  Resources include: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ready.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ready.gov<\/a>; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/faq-details\/Maps-of-Federally-Declared-Disasters\" target=\"_blank\">Disasters and Maps of Federally Declared Disasters<\/a>; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fema.gov\/office-environmental-planning-and-historic-preservation\" target=\"_blank\">Environmental Planning and Historic Preservation Program<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/culturalrescue.si.edu\/hentf\/about-hentf\/\">HENTF<\/a>.  <strong><em>Before and After Disasters: Federal Funding for Cultural Institutions<\/em><\/strong> FEMA-533, 2005 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Massachusetts is a part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/region-i-about-us\">FEMA&#8217;s Region I<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>National Weather Service (NWS) <\/strong>provides warnings (Advisory, Warning, and Watch) for extreme weather conditions through their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/box\/\">Boston area (BOX) operations<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:left\"><strong><em>State<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) <\/strong>provides a great deal of guidance and resources for persons and institutions of the Commonwealth. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/eopss\/agencies\/mema\/after\/assistance\/\" target=\"_blank\">Public Assistance Information<\/a>; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/eopss\/docs\/mema\/resources\/plans\/state-hazard-mitigation-plan\/massachusetts-state-hazard-mitigation-plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">State Hazard Mitigation Plan<\/a>; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/eopss\/agencies\/mema\/\" target=\"_blank\">Emergency Management Directors Listings<\/a> (on the MEMA homepage); <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mblc.state.ma.us\/costepma\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/28dd0-costep_ma_annex.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Protection of Cultural and Historical Resources Annex<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MEMA <\/strong>is the state agency with primary responsibility for ensuring the  state\u2019s resilience to disasters. <strong>MEMA\u2019s <\/strong>staff of professional planners,  communications specialists, operations managers, and support personnel  is committed to an all-hazards approach to emergency management. By  building and sustaining effective partnerships with federal, state, and  local government agencies and with the private sector\u2014individuals,  families, non-profits and businesses\u2014<strong>MEMA<\/strong> ensures the Commonwealth\u2019s  ability to rapidly recover from large and small disasters by assessing  and mitigating hazards, enhancing preparedness, ensuring effective  response, and building the capacity to recover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:left\"><strong><em>Local<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Between 2017 and 2018, <\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.mblc.state.ma.us\/finding-common-ground\"><strong>Finding Common Ground: Collaborative Training for the Cultural Heritage and Emergency Response Communities<\/strong><\/a><\/em><strong>, was devel\u00adoped by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the Massachusetts State Archives, and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. Explore the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.mblc.state.ma.us\/finding-common-ground\"><em><strong>Finding Common Ground<\/strong><\/em><\/a><strong> website for extensive and thorough resources to help in planning many aspects of your emergency response program.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local emergency management directors are required throughout the state. In any response, <a href=\"https:\/\/training.fema.gov\/emiweb\/is\/icsresource\/index.htm\">Incident Command Systems<\/a> are the national standard method of communication and organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t want to be exchanging business cards with your city or town\u2019s Emergency Management Director (EMD) <em>during <\/em>an emergency. Not sure who your EMD is? Check out the Emergency Management Director directory available on the homepage of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/eopss\/agencies\/mema\/\">Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency<\/a>. Then contact your EMD.
