Assistant Reference Librarian/Assistant Children's Librarian, Beverly Public Library (Beverly)

This is a great full-time opportunity for someone who enjoys working at public service desks helping patrons of all ages. 


This is a split position, with approximately half of the hours working in Children’s and half in the Adult Reference department.


• Responsible for working at the Reference Desk to assist patrons in a friendly and professional manner with their information needs
• Responds to Reference and local history requests that come in via mail, email, telephone, fax, etc.
• Recommends additions and withdrawals from both the print and online reference collection to the Head of the Reference Department
• Participates in both selection and collection development for the adult collection to ensure that the Beverly Public Library’s collection remains up to date and well rounded
• Assists with weeding the Adult non-fiction collection on a regular basis
• Instructs patrons in the use of the online catalog and other Library resources
• Assists the Head of Reference in troubleshooting various equipment, such as microform machines, PCs, printers, fax machines, etc.
• Processes ComCat and interlibrary loans; keeps statistics on interlibrary loans; reports ComCat and interlibrary loan statistics to Director
• Acts as the Library’s representative to NOBLE for ComCat and interlibrary loan
• Assists the Head of Reference in the coordination and supervision of reference volunteers
• Ensures that supplies are stocked in the reference department area
• Assists at circulation and Farms branch if needed

Children’s Services:

• Responsible for the supervision of the Children’s Department in the absence of the head of Children’s Services. Keeps informed about issues, services and innovations related to Children’s Library Service. The work requires the exercise of considerable skill, initiative, and independent judgment.
• Plans, coordinates, and presents services, resources, and programs designed to interest children.
• Assists in selecting materials for children’s collection.
• Conducts story hours and other programs in the library, in schools, and in the community designed to develop among children a love of reading and learning.
• Provides tours of the library and instruction in the use of the library resources to children, parents, and teachers.
• Works closely with local schools.
• Performs reader advisory tasks such as recommending Library materials to children, parents and teachers and prepares reading lists and bibliographies, in print, and on the library’s web site.
• Instructs patrons in the use of the online catalog and other Library resources.
• Provides reference services to children and others using the Children’s Room in a friendly and professional manner.
• Assists in monitoring the behavior and conduct of Library patrons in the Children’s Room.

General Professional responsibilities:

• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other staff members
• Attends professional and community meetings
• Communicates effectively with the public.
• Other duties as assigned


Minimum professional qualifications: Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from a graduate school program accredited by the American Library Association (Staff Librarian) OR currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in Library or Information Science from a graduate school accredited by the American Library Association with half or more courses completed, including a course in Reference (Librarian 1).

$18.7538/hour (Librarian 1), $26.4306/hour (Staff Librarian), depending on qualifications
