Access Services Specialist, Boston College (Boston)

The Access Services Specialist assists in the provision of circulation services that facilitate, promote and enhance user access to library resources and services.   The Specialist oversees daily billing and fines operations for the O’Neill, Bapst, Theology and Ministry and Social Work libraries. The Specialist uses the financial transaction functions within the Library’s automated system as well as the University Student Account System and associated reports. The Specialist is responsible for mediating disputes involving overdue materials, lost items, and claim returns in a diplomatic, sensitive and fair manner.

The Specialist is also responsible for maintaining documentation pertaining guest accounts; providing training to students and staff; monitoring the libraries’ central email account; participating in the planning and execution of collection maintenance projects; assessing the quality of work conducted by student employees, and providing work place support for these staff.

The Specialist must be able to analyze problems reported in the circulation system so that issues can be reported to the appropriate unit. The Specialist must be able to recognize problems in the organization and layout of material in the O’Neill Library, conduct emergency collection maintenance initiatives, communicate collection maintenance problems to other staff, and recommend solutions to the Manager, Circulation & Collection Maintenance Services.

The Specialist must be able to recognize items that are incorrectly cataloged or in need of mending and route these items to the appropriate department so that the problem is corrected.



SCHEDULE:  35-hour week, 12 months per year permanent position.

HOURS:        

September-May

Sunday – Thursday, 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm

June-August   Sunday, 11 am – 7 pm, Monday-Thursday, 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Scheduling changes may be needed during holidays, breaks and occasionally to meet the staffing needs of the Access Services department.

Qualifications

Two + years related library experience preferred; Service orientation essential; Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time; excellent communication skills; Understanding of the library's mission and goals essential; ability to work collaboratively in a team based environment important; ability to communicate with faculty, students and staff.
