Duties & Responsibilities

Information and Technical Services actively supports the teaching and research mission of the Harvard Library by managing monograph, serial and e-resource acquisitions, metadata creation, and metadata management for the Harvard Library.

As a member of the Electronic Resources unit within the Electronic Resources and Serials Section, under the supervision of the Manager, E-Resources, the incumbent provides timely access to Harvard Library collections by participating in activities related to acquisitions, licensing, and implementation of networked electronic resources.

Priorities will be set to maximize contributions to the overall goals of the Information and Technical Services Department of the Harvard Library. Due to the varied nature and volume of the work in ITS, all ITS staff may be called upon to contribute to work in any unit or team of the ITS department, as organizational needs warrant.


  • Implements and activates electronic resources in the Harvard Library's e-resource management and access systems, working with vendors/publishers, Harvard library staff and Library Technology Services staff to enable access.

  • Serves as first level support for electronic resource access and subscription problems, which requires frequent communication not only with library staff, and vendors/publishers, but also with library users, employing a variety of ticketing systems and software to compose related correspondence and trouble-shoot as needed.

  • Maintains accurate information about Harvard's electronic resources and related acquisitions, including entitlements, transfers, renewals, and cancellations.

  • Communicates with appropriate library staff about availability of collection funds.

  • Creates and maintains records for electronic resources in Harvard Library systems including access, order, and cost distribution data, and processes associated invoices.

  • Activates large scale metadata sets (Primo Central Index) to support granular e-resource discovery.

  • Collaborates with Library Technology Services staff on the testing of service packs and software updates, and the configuration of e-resources including linking standards and protocol for the Harvard Library's e-resource management and access systems.

  • Monitors vendor communications regarding platform changes and service interruptions; communicates these to colleagues and patrons via webpages and/or library systems.

  • Creates and updates training and procedural documentation for the unit.

  • Participates in the evaluation, development, and migration of systems and procedures for managing Harvard's electronic resources.

  • Contributes to the overall goals of the department as appropriate.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 2 years' experience working in a library or research setting, preferably in e-resources, acquisitions or serials required.
  • Strong technical skills including proficiency in Windows, non-Windows, and mobile environments.
  • Demonstrated facility with automated systems, including content and customer service management systems required.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Significant organizational and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail required.

Additional Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest in the management of online information resources in libraries.

  • Proficiency with other operating systems such as Unix preferred.

  • Aptitude for learning new computer applications quickly with minimal instruction.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving and highly collaborative environment.

  • Ability to work independently to perform complex tasks.

  • Experience with integrated library systems and/or library services platforms, Ex Libris's Alma system preferred.

  • Ability to effectively solve problems and exercise discerning judgment

  • Sensitivity to working in a diverse user environment

  • Strong public service orientation, including previous library or customer service experience
