Assistant Director, Southwick Public Library (Southwick)

The Southwick Public Library is seeking a candidate to fill a 37.5 hour per week benefitted, non-union position. This position requires a B.A. or B.S. degree and 2-4 years of experience in library work and some supervisory experience. Experience with Evergreen is highly desirable. Pay range $40,000-$45,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Job Description

Assistant Director



Supervision



The Assistant Director reports to the Library Director and is responsible for the general, daily operations of the library, performing circulation, processing or public service duties under the general supervision of the Library Director. This position requires some supervisory responsibilities for subordinate staff and the orientation and training of personnel. The occupant of the position is expected to be able to perform the regular duties of the position with minimal direct supervision.



Supervisory Authority



The Assistant Director is responsible for the instruction, assignment of work, and checking the work of subordinates as to organizational policy and procedures, methods and practices, standards of performance, and other matters affecting employee work performance or the delivery of services. Maintains good employee relations.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities



Organizes and maintains the financial records of the library. Prepares requests for purchase orders, warrants and payroll, and provides reports of accounts payable using a computerized system.



Maintains records of library statistics, preparing figures as required for state and local reports.



Supervises projects done by regular adult volunteers and subordinates.



Inventories and orders library and office supplies. Opens and checks all materials received and makes sure the packing slips and invoices are accurate. Distributes items to the person that ordered them.



Assists with library circulation procedures during the peak times and in the absence of the Library Technician/Circulation Librarian.



Supports collection development by assisting with weeding, reviewing and updating records in the C/W MARS catalog.



Maintains control of the periodicals ordered, received, renewed and handles past-due notices for borrowed items.



Assists with the daily pulling and processing of Interlibrary Loan materials going out and coming in.

Maintains and develops knowledge of library procedures and activities by participating in appropriate in-service training and regional programs. Develops and maintains contact with other libraries. The occupant of the position must be able to attend local and regional meetings.



Assists in maintenance and trouble-shooting of library equipment.



In the absence of the Director, the Assistant Director will be in charge of the library.



Performs other activities as required or duties as assigned by the Director.



Acceptable Experience and Training



Required: A 4-year B.A. or B.S. Degree, 2-4 years of experience in library work and some supervisory experience.



Required within four years of hire date: A sub-professional certificate from the Mass. Board of Library Commissioners or a M.L.S. Degree.



Demonstrated interest in Public Library service.



Special Knowledge/Abilities for Position



·         Bookkeeping, accounting, computer skills

·         Experience with Evergreen is highly desirable.

·         Strong interpersonal and customer service skills

·         Ability to work independently

·         Ability to adapt to changing priorities

·         Knowledge of library equipment and ability to make repairs preferred.



Physical Requirements



The occupant of the position must spend several hours a day walking, standing, and sitting. Activities include moderate to frequent physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending and twisting. The position also requires moderate to frequent grasping, pulling and pushing of materials as well as fine manipulation associated with the required use of a computer, keyboard, and calculator. The Assistant Director must also be able to lift and move objects up to twenty (20) pounds on a frequent basis.



Environmental Conditions



The Assistant Director works indoors. The regular solvents used are adhesives such as rubber cement and cleaning solutions.
