Job Description

General Statement of Responsibilities: 

This position is a 19 hour per week position that encompasses managing the children’s and young adult departments as well as assisting with circulation and general library services.

Reports to: Library Director

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists in all library services, operations, and activities:

Materials selection, collection development, and maintenance.
Cataloging and other technical service operations.
Circulation services: checking in/out materials, placing holds and ILL requests, performing reference services, shelve material and shelf read, assist patrons with technology and library use.
Open/close library facility as required.
Substituting during the director’s absence.
Assist in additional library services as needed.

Manages the children’s and young adult departments:

Knowledge of and interest in children’s and young adult literature.
Selects, develops, maintains, and weeds the children’s and young adult collections.
Catalogs and processes new materials.
Plans, develops, and executes programs and events for children and young adults, including summer reading.
Prepares and runs the weekly story time for children and caregivers.
Researches programs and writes and manages grants which support children’s and young adult programming.

Qualifications

The qualifications for this position:

A pleasant personality and demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
The ability to speak effectively and clearly.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail in record keeping, ability to multi-task.
Ability to exercise independent judgment in decision making.
Appreciation of the many facets of library service and a willingness to share skills with the general public.
Basic computer skills. Knowledge of Evergreen software helpful, but not required.
General knowledge of library principles and practice.
Flexible schedule, ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Work is performed in a typical office environment, subject to quiet or moderate noise. Up to one-third of time is spent standing, walking, stooping or reaching with hands or arms. Up to two-thirds of the time is spent using hands, fingers, handling or feeling objects, tools or controls. The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. This position frequently requires the employee to make decisions, lift 10 pounds and on occasion as much as 30 pounds, seldom more than 50 pounds, use close vision and able to adjust focus, use personal computers and office machines.
