Reporting to the Managing Director for Library Technology Services, the Manager of Library Software Engineering is a member of a high-performing leadership team which focuses on development and implementation of world-class solutions to fulfill the mission of the Harvard Library: to advance scholarship and teaching through the collection, creation, application, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge. The Manager supervises a team of library software engineers responsible for developing, enhancing, and maintaining an extensive portfolio of Library applications and platforms. They will assume a lead role, in collaboration with the Managing Director, Architect, peer managers, and the software engineering team, in designing world-class and modern solutions. They will serve as a leader in the department in developing industry-class software development practices and workflows and will be a core contributor to the development of a culture of collaboration and openness within Harvard and beyond.

The Manager of Library Software Engineering will serve as a mentor and coach to all engineers in the department and will help identify, coordinate, and lead skills and professional engineering activities with the objective of building organizational capacity and developing people. In collaboration with peer managers, they will help determine the composition of project teams and allocate resources to support the requirements of a complex and dynamic portfolio. The Manager will also be a leader in the broader global digital library.

Typical Core Duties

  • Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment
  • Participate fully in software development life cycle
  • Lead development of technical solutions to deliver business requirements
  • Participate in long term strategic planning for the application portfolio(s)
  • Establish and maintain internal/external stakeholder relationships
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct


Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years' post-secondary education and/or relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience


Additional Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge in one or more of the following software development frameworks or languages : Java, Ruby on Rails, Python, JavaScript, Angular, NodeJS, React.
  • Strong knowledge of server and storage architectures, as well as cloud based solutions; including authentication, authorization, account provisioning, identity management, and directory services, and proven experience designing systems that integrate with / incorporate these services
  • Proven ability to capture, understand, document and convey complex business needs and processes, translate them into functional requirements and system specifications, and develop a supporting technical solution at an abstract level, and detailed technical specifications (including choice of implementation technologies)
  • Experienced with Agile methodologies, processes and tools, and proven experience integrating agile methods into a department.
  • Knowledge of key trends in digital developments in research libraries including open source community projects, linked open data, bibliographic standards, metadata schemas, digital repositories, and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Sophisticated understanding of how information is organized and used to support the academic and research missions of the university.
