Technology Librarian, Dedham Public Library (Dedham)

Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the User Experience (UX) and Access Manager in 
accordance with the Library and Town of Dedham policies and procedures. Employee generally 
establish a work plan under the supervision of the UX and Access Manager and completes work 
in accordance with established library policies and standards. Work requires a high level of Town of individual judgment and initiative and is generally reviewed only to assure conformance with 
policy, or other requirements.

Job Goal
Manages, develops and delivers innovative technology programming in a creative environment. 
Utilizes hands-on training and collaboration with patrons in support of STEAM (Science, 
Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematic) content and resources. 

Trains staff to assist patrons with technology equipment. Maintains technology devices.

Salary/Benefits
This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) union position with a benefit package available according to the AFSCME Local 362, Council 93, Dedham Public Library staff  bargaining unit contract.

Essential Functions of the Job
The essential functions of duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude

of the position’s function as a part of an overall municipal team to ensure effective and efficient 
municipal operations.

Develops and implements programming around new and emerging technology.

Assists patrons with the use of computers, devices and assists with technology issues.

Demonstrates technology outside of the library at community events.

Operates and maintains library hardware (3D printers, VR, Library of Things, and other equipment) and related software.

Develops a training plan for staff on relevant equipment; informs staff of updates or changes to 
equipment or procedure.

Staffs public service desk in the media center; covers other public service desks as needed.

Performs other similar or related duties as required, or as situation dictates.

Physical Demands
Minimal physical effort is required to perform duties under typical library conditions. Frequently required to lift books, periodicals, etc. or boxes of paper or other items weighing up to 30 pounds, with occasions requiring moving, with assistance, objects of greater weight. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak and hear, use hands to operate office equipment. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

Work Environment
Work is performed under typical library conditions; the work environment is generally quiet, with interruptions to provide service; the workload is subject to fluctuations. Employee must work some nights and Saturdays.

The employee operates standard office equipment; personal computers and printers, scanners, copy machine, telephone, and other small office equipment as well as makerspace hardware such as 3D printers, drones, robots, etc.. 

Employee has frequent contact with the public and other department employees, and may have occasional contact with other Town Departments, officials, vendors, and external agencies. 

Errors could result in delay or loss of service to the staff or public and/or failure to maintain the desired standard of library service.

Qualifications

Qualifications
Education
MLS from an ALA accredited institution, STEAM education background preferred.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Awareness of new developments and trends in public libraries; robust computer and technology skills required. 

Working knowledge of coding, CAD, Adobe suite & familiarity with makerspaces preferred.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels; ability to provide exceptional customer service.

High level of energy and self-motivation to create new services and programs; skill in planning and presenting appropriate programs for young children, teens, and adults.
