Teen Experience Support Specialist, Framingham Public Library (Framingham)

HOURS: 20 hours per week, one evening per week and alternate Friday/Saturday

Position Purpose:
The Framingham Public Library, a recognized leader in collaborative programming, located 20
miles west of Boston with a 53,000 sq. ft. Downtown Main Library, a 17,000 sq. ft. branch
library, and a Bookmobile, seeks a dynamic and energetic Teen Experience Support Specialist
with the creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm to join our team in delivering exceptional library
services focused on access and equity.

Under the direction of the Head of Teen Experience supports the development and
implementation of library services to teens, including collections, programming, and outreach.
Works as part of the Patron Experience team to support library circulation, including working on
all service desks: Main Circulation, Children’s, and Bookmobile. Promotes and provides exemplary
customer service to a vibrant, multi-cultural population in the city of Framingham, the premier
resource for free inquiry, creative enrichment, and lifelong learning. Exemplifies innovation,
flexibility, collegiality, and enthusiasm for all aspects of library customer service.
▪ May perform duties at the Main Library, Branch Library, and Bookmobile as necessary.
▪ Nights and weekend hours may be required at the discretion of the Director.
▪ Works under the direction of the Supervisor of Youth Services, the Supervisor Borrower
Services, and the Assistant Director and Director.
▪ Greets patrons warmly and maintains a positive, flexible attitude and enthusiasm for service in
all aspects of work.
▪ Good rapport with teens is essential.

Essential Functions:

▪ Provides positive public service.
▪ Works with the Head of Teen Experience to provide dynamic engaging and responsive library
services to Teen patrons. Under the Head of Teen Experience’s direction, collaborates with
other departments and staff in developing services.
▪ Under the direction of the Head of Teen Experience supports collection development by
selecting for Teen collection.
▪ Develops, supports, and supervises programs, and supports community outreach for Teen
Experience Department. May accompany Head of Teen Experience to school visits, and/or visit
schools or other community locations or events solo as requested.
▪ Assists Head of Teen Experience in managing and supervising department volunteers.
▪ Supports Bookmobile operations as directed by supervisors.
▪ Performs a variety of circulation duties, including patron registration, checking in and checking
out library materials, collecting overdue fines, and placing reserves. Maintains confidentiality
of patron records per Mass. General Laws.
▪ Maintains active and in-depth knowledge of Teen collection and provides Teen collection
guidance and advice. Works on the Circulation Desk assisting patrons in checking in and out
Library materials. Performs these functions in accordance with ALA guidelines for patron
privacy. Updates, retrieves and interprets data in the library's electronic systems.
▪ Generates custom reports to facilitate management of library collections or the patron
database. May facilitate interchange of materials between the Main Library and Branch.
▪ Participates in planning, setting up, and maintaining display of library materials. Performs
various functions associated with maintenance of and access to the library collections.
▪ Participates in meetings, making recommendations for improvements in service. Reads and
straightens shelves. May prepare and lead book discussions and programming at all library

Work is performed primarily in an office environment with normal office noise and traffic.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree; one to two (1-2) years library experience; coursework in Teen or Children’s
Literature and Library Services; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Coursework may be completed after hire.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge of:
▪ Integrated Library Systems (ILS), Innovative Sierra preferred
▪ Library electronic collections and technologies.

▪ Young Adult literature and culture.

Ability to:
