Children's Librarian, Milton Public Library (Milton)

The Milton Public Library is a busy suburban library that serves as a community center for the 27,000 residents. The Library staff, consisting of 20 combined full and part time positions, provides library services from six to seven days a week throughout the year. The Library has seen growth in the usage of its collections, programming and meeting spaces over the past several years.

We are looking for an independent, capable, motivated, and enthusiastic person to serve as a key player in the daily functioning of the library. The Children’s Librarian will serve as a member of the Library’s Children’s Department, and will be responsible for developing and coordinating library services to children and caregivers.

This person will work under the direction of the Assistant Director and Library Director, or independently when assigned. In the absence of the Assistant Director, this person will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Children’s Room.


Responsible for all aspects of library services to children and adults working with children, including direct provision of service to library users, staff training in child related services, program planning and delivery of programming and storytelling, collection development and management, and collaboration with other library departments to provide effective customer service.

Principal Duties

·         Provides circulation, reference and reader’s advisory services to children and caregivers

·         Develops programs and services for children and caregivers that reflect the library’s goals and community interests

·         Enforces policies and procedures for children’s services and recommends changes to them

·         Assists with development and maintenance of circulating, reference and digital collections for children and caregivers

·         Promotes library community relations to encourage broad awareness and use of children’s services through public speaking to community and educational groups, especially in the form of school visits 

·         Manages department publicity, including website, social media, and print materials

·         Assists with reporting children’s room program and circulation statistics, and other statistics as necessary

·         Assists with selecting, ordering and cataloging of children’s books and materials

·         Attends professional meetings and workshops and serves on professional and in-library committees, as assigned

·         Keeps well informed of trends in library services to children and caregivers

·         Works at various public service desks at the library


Experience:   One to two years of library experience in children’s services preferred; competency with all aspects of library technology as it applies to public service.


·         Thorough knowledge of all aspects of modern public library principles and practices in service to children and caregivers, including reference, circulation and reader’s advisory

·         Demonstrated commitment to innovative and customer responsive service

·         Knowledge of children’s reader interest levels, books, authors and reading genres

·         Knowledge of children’s user interest levels in non-book formats, including video and videogames

·         Knowledge of children’s user interest levels in library programming opportunities

·         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of library staff in a team environment

·         Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with school and community groups  

·         Flexibility and the ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment

·         Ability to work independently with limited supervision and to exercise initiative and good judgment in the performance of duties

·         Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

·         Organization, attention to detail, and time management skills

·         Must possess a positive customer service attitude, professional demeanor, and the ability to be friendly, courteous and tactful with the public

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and carry books and other library materials, push loaded book trucks, and operate a computer keyboard and barcode scanner.  Willingness and ability to work in a variety of locations at the Library. Work schedule includes nights and weekends.

$29.03  / hour

Salary Notes

Position comes with step increases. This is a union position.
