Children's Librarian - part-time, Springfield City Library (Springfield)

The Central Library is the heart of our busy library system.  The Springfield (MA) City Library seeks applications to work at our forward-looking, award-winning public library. We are recruiting talented, community-engaged candidates for this part-time, 18.5 hours/week job. Apply by Monday, August 22, 2022 at 11:59 pm Eastern.

The Central Library is a lovely century-old building with a large Community Room for programming and performances, as well as a dedicated children's program room. Our neighborhood includes the Springfield Museums, many apartment blocks, and Downtown Springfield.

The Children's Librarian is part of a four person team and has shared responsibility for collection development of print and non-print materials, programming, reference services, reader's advisory, outreach, and community engagement. Qualifications

We're looking for candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and the completion of an American Library Association-accredited Masters of Library Science. Candidates currently enrolled in an MLS program are encouraged to apply as well! You should be excited to work with children and their caregivers. You'll need an excellent customer service orientation, and a "turned outward" approach to community engagement is ideal. Bilingual abilities desirable (English and Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Arabic, Somali, Dari, or other community language). The City of Springfield has a residency requirement and allows new hires up to a year to establish residency.

Our community is made up of over 156,000 residents from diverse backgrounds, predominantly Latinx, African Americans, and white folks, plus many new Americans. It is a young population, with a median age of about 32, and a burgeoning entrepreneurial movement. Over 57 languages are spoken in the public schools. Our library system has nine locations: a downtown Central Library, and eight neighborhood branches. Residency within the City of Springfield, MA, within a year of the date of hire is required.
