Manager of Programs and Communications, Newton Free Library (Newton)

Responsibilities:

§  Responsible for promoting the Library through the offering of cultural and educational events, concerts, lectures, exhibits and other programs or activities, and coordinating Library events for adults and special events.

§  Creates press releases and promotional materials to publicize services, special events and programs via effective means, such as newsletter, social media, television, printed promotional materials, exhibits, and other media relations activities.

§  Oversees the implementation of promotional materials and signage within the Library according to established standards.

§  Prepares and schedules library programming for adults, including music, speakers, exhibits, concerts, lectures, discussion groups, artists, radio, and TV programs, other media spots. Screens and selects presenters and manages a process of accepting and evaluating program proposals from outside speakers and presenters.

§  Coordinates programming and outreach offered by members of the Adult Services Division and manages the space allocation, scheduling and evaluation of those programs.

§  Assists in the management and operation of technology related to programming and events, including computers, projector, sound and virtual offerings. 

§  Coordinates and manages library exhibits, presenters, and artists. Manages a submission and selection process for exhibits in the various Library gallery and exhibit spaces. Manages exhibit scheduling and manages the processes of exhibit installation and de-installation.

§  Writes, edits, designs, and produces flyers, annual report, brochures, and monthly newsletter. Coordinates graphics production.

§  Recommends and implements media and delivery systems to best utilize advertisements, direct mail, email marketing and other communications to reach targeted demographics. Develops and coordinates appropriate promotional strategies and activities. Manages the Library's advertising function. Writes press releases and other external communications.

§  Plans and coordinates special promotional programs and press conferences.

§  Maintains close relationship and liaison with local press, radio and television media. Maintains and promotes positive customer, civic and governmental relationships. Engages with the local Chamber of Commerce. 

§  Follows and adheres to department, City and other government rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

37.5 hours/ week; some weekend hours

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Bachelors or more advanced degree in Communications, Library Science or related field and three to five years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Broad knowledge of behavioral science, communications and public relations and the operation of office equipment such as personal computers and computer software. Demonstrated excellence in written communication and public speaking.
