Bibliographic Services Supervisor, North of Boston Library Exchange (NOBLE) (Danvers)
The Bibliographic Services Supervisor has principal responsibility for management of NOBLE’s database and oversees NOBLE’s digital library/digital repository service and the integration of electronic resources. The position reports to the Member Services Manager.
This position implements workflows that provide effective bibliographic control for NOBLE databases; oversees the work of, and serves as a resource to, the NOBLE cataloging staff; directly supervises the part-time catalogers; and works with other NOBLE staff in a team environment and with constituencies across our member libraries to provide quick and reliable access to quality information about a wide range of material in many genres, languages, and formats.
The nature of digital work is transitional and involves continuing existing processes and participating in the introduction and deployment of new systems and procedures. As changes are introduced, the mix of responsibilities may shift accordingly.
Essential Functions
- Employs current and emerging metadata schemas to make library resources available. Uses traditional cataloging principles and practices to perform original cataloging and complex copy cataloging for a wide range of formats, including serials and e-resources, upgrading records according to NOBLE practice.
- Coordinates NOBLE cataloging operations to assure prompt and consistent service.
- Serves as a resource person concerning MARC bibliographic and authority record sources, cataloging, classification, database maintenance, record loading, authority control and workflow issues for NOBLE library staff and the technical services librarians of member libraries.
- Works collaboratively with NOBLE and member library staff on information organization and access needs.
- Writes and assists with internal and external documentation for cataloging, serials and other topics.
- Provides training and consulting for member library staff in the area of cataloging and serials control.
- Organizes efforts to digitize material and works with digitized materials for the purposes of preservation, searching, wider dissemination, and ease of access, including training and consulting with NOBLE library staff and NOBLE staff and working with vendors as appropriate.
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of institutional standards and best practices for the NOBLE Digital Heritage program.
- Facilitates the addition of library resources into the NOBLE Digital Heritage program and works with member libraries on files, workflow and metadata.
- Works with other digital repositories and heritage sites statewide and nationally to assure wide accessibility of Digital Heritage resources.
- Participates in database and catalog improvement projects, including authority control, record enhancement and data cleanup and standardization.
- Develops a thorough knowledge of the Evergreen serials and reports functionality and serves as a liaison to member libraries for training, implementation and troubleshooting; participates in developing specifications and testing for software enhancements.
- Work with the Member Services Manager and other NOBLE staff members to research, select, install, test, maintain and use various workstations and programs in an effort to improve the efficiency of the cataloging operation.
- Stay up to date on latest cataloging and other standards through reading, webinars, training, conference attendance, etc.
- Serves on committees or task forces as needed, with approval of the Member Services Manager.
- Contributes to the Evergreen community, including bug reporting, bug testing, documentation, and participation in virtual community events.
- Upholds the policies and contractual obligations of NOBLE.
Non-essential Job Duties
- Participates in the updating and designing of NOBLE’s websites and OPAC interface pages.
- Participates in the selection and integration of electronic resources.
- Provides general ILS support to library staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications
- Masters of Library of Science from an ALA-accredited institution.
- Minimum of three years cataloging experience.
- Extensive knowledge of current cataloging practices, rules and trends, including RDA, LCSH, and MARC formats.
- Knowledge of authority control principles and practice.
- Experience with original cataloging.
- Experience working with an automated library management system.
- Experience working with SkyRiver or another bibliographic utility.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, etc.)
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proven customer service skills and orientation.
- Proven ability to work as a member of a team.
- Ability to be self-motivated, to exercise initiative and independent judgment, to solve problems with minimal assistance, and to prioritize tasks in a busy support environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to effectively present information one-on-one or in a small group.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years supervisory experience.
- Experience working with the Evergreen Integrated Library System.
- Experience working with Omeka or another Digital Asset Management system.
- Experience cataloging materials in a language other than English.
- Familiarity with BIBFRAME.
- Experience delivering training to people with varying levels of experience.
