Engagement Librarian, Ayer Library (Ayer)

DEFINITION
As a member of the Public Services division and under the supervision of the Assistant Director, this position develops and implements programs, provides outreach to the community, markets library programs and services, and works alongside colleagues to provide a range of information services to the public.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Designs, organizes, and executes social, educational, cultural, arts, technology, and maker programming in in-person and virtual formats for adult and multi-age audiences. Collaborates with the Youth Services division to support all ages programming.  
• Works with the Public Services and Youth Services divisions to develop and implement practices that engage the Library’s community and increase Library usage.
• Interfaces with community organizations to collect and distribute information about services for patrons, explore programming opportunities outside of the building, and collaborate on initiatives.
• Publicizes and promotes library programs and services by developing marketing strategies, designing marketing materials for programs, posting to and monitoring social media, contributing to the Library newsletter, and providing content for the Library website.
• Evaluates and reports on impact of programming, outreach, and communications efforts.
• Provides judgment-free circulation, reference, and reader’s advisory services to patrons of all ages at the Library’s main circulation desk. Assists patrons in discovering and using a variety of Library resources. 
• Keeps current with knowledge and trends in library services, popular media, and technology.
• Performs other related job duties as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The employee works from policies, goals, and objectives under the guidance and supervision of the Assistant Director. 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
The employee may supervise the work of Library Assistants, Library Clerks, and/or volunteers. 

JUDGMENT AND COMPLEXITY
The work involves the performance of specialized procedures requiring comprehensive knowledge of division functions and techniques or the exercise of technical expertise in applying standard professional techniques. The employee may be required to exercise judgment in the analysis of facts or circumstances surrounding individual problems in order to determine the appropriate course of action.

NATURE AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
Contacts are with co-workers, the public, representatives of organizations, and groups and involve interactions with those who have conflicting opinions or objectives, diverse points of view, or differences where achieving compromise is required to secure support, concurrence, or compliance.

CONFIDENTIALITY
The employee has regular access to confidential and protected patron information requiring attention to detail in handling records. With training and support from the supervisor, the employee is expected to follow procedures to protect confidential information. 

PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical and environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job.

• Works primarily indoors in an office/library setting.
• Sits or stands, with intermittent periods of stooping and walking. May be required to move objects such as files, books, boxes of paper, office supplies, and office equipment weighing up to 30 lbs.
• Applies motor skills to move objects, file and sort documents, and use office equipment such as telephones and computers.
• Routinely reads documents for general understanding and analytical purposes, including handwriting, spreadsheets, and forms; inspects surroundings and fine details to assess conditions of materials and equipment; and reviews detailed information displayed on a computer screen
• Employee must be willing and able to travel to meetings and events outside the library, must possess a valid driver’s license, and must have regular access to a motor vehicle that can be used for transportation and the delivery of outreach materials.



HOURS
32 hours per week including evenings, plus one (1) five (5)-hour shift every other week, or as needed

Paid vacation and sick leave are provided in accordance with the Ayer Library’s Personnel Policy. Health and dental insurance, pension, and other benefits are available as detailed in the Town of Ayer’s Personnel Policy for non-union employees.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any equivalent combination of the below-listed education, training, certification, and experience, is qualifying:  

• Bachelor’s degree in a library-, communications-, or marketing-related field
• 3 to 5 years of related experience



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library and Information Science (MLIS).
