Library Assistant II, Salem Public Library

Performs circulation and children’s desk attendant duties including checking library materials in and out, reserving books, and answering telephone inquiries.
Participates in library programming for adults and children. Processes new materials and performs cataloging functions. Selects library materials based on knowledge of community needs; weeds collections as necessary; reviews professional journals and keeps abreast of current literature.
Provides reference and reader’s advisory service to adults and children. Instructs individuals and groups in the use of the library. Provides updates for library’s website and social media.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Considerable knowledge of library methods, tools, and practices; good knowledge of library collection; good knowledge of library science related to reference, online library systems, and cataloging and classification work. Working knowledge of many diverse subjects; ability to research using standard professional library tools.
Ability to adapt to increasingly digital library world. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and co-workers. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with patrons, in a busy urban environment.
Bachelors’ Degree and library experience required.
