Library Senior Technician - Children's Library & Young Adult Department, Berkshire Athenaeum - Pittsfield's Public Library

Berkshire Athenaeum seeks a highly motivated, dynamic, enthusiastic addition to our Children’s Library during an exciting era of growth and innovation! The ideal candidate is passionate about providing excellent service to youth from birth through high school, with an emphasis on services to tweens, teens, and young adults. The successful candidate will have interest in various technologies, building relationships with schools and community partners, and assisting with development of inventive programming to meet the ever-changing needs of our youth patrons. Our candidate will also have knowledge of current publishing trends in Young Adult literature for collection development and reader’s advisory services. We are seeking a candidate who is flexible, accommodating, can communicate effectively with both youth and their adult caregivers and who is comfortable with thinking outside of the box.  

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Working under the general supervision of a Senior Supervisor, this position is second in charge of the Children’s Library, assists patrons locating and using materials in the Children’s Library and the Young Adult Department, staffs the departments' public service desks (including circulation duties) without supervision, conducts and delegates basic clerical duties assigned by the department Supervisor, assists with program planning and implementation in both departments, assists with ongoing projects and other duties as assigned. The position is housed in the Children’s Library but will have an emphasis on Young Adult programming and collection development. 


- Bachelor’s degree required
- Knowledge of current children’s and young adult literature trends
- Highly self-motivated, energetic, creative and flexible with the ability to prioritize tasks and work independently while also functioning as part of a team
- Ability to work with children and teens both individually and in groups
- Ability to deal effectively with parents, teachers and other adults working with children and teens
- Proficient in the use of computers, especially with regards to verifying web and bibliographic resources
- Willingness to learn new technology and other skills
- Must have a commitment to making positive connections with children and teens
