{"id":1959,"date":"2025-08-01T17:45:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T21:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mblc.state.ma.us\/mblc_blog\/?p=1959"},"modified":"2025-08-04T09:53:26","modified_gmt":"2025-08-04T13:53:26","slug":"mblc-update-august-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mblc.state.ma.us\/mblc_blog\/2025\/08\/01\/mblc-update-august-1\/","title":{"rendered":"MBLC Update &#8211; August 1"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Good afternoon,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two IMLS related happenings this week: The first is that the federal House\u00a0<strong>budget markup has been pushed back<\/strong>, which means\u00a0<strong>there is still time to contact legislators about IMLS funding.<br><br><\/strong>In the federal budget framework that was recently passed, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is funded at $6 million to essentially\u00a0<strong>close down<\/strong>\u00a0the agency.\u00a0<strong>BUT that is not a done deal.<\/strong>\u00a0While IMLS is part of the federal budget,\u00a0<em>Congress<\/em>, not the President<em>,<\/em>\u00a0determines how much funding IMLS will get.<br><br>This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bookriot.com\/imls-funding-future\/\">article on BookRiot<\/a>\u00a0has valuable information about the timeline, process, and who to contact. From Book Riot article: \u201cContacting the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/appropriations.house.gov\/subcommittees\/labor-health-and-human-services-education-and-related-agencies\">members of the Labor-HHS-Education subcommittee<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is not inappropriate. Be frank about why you are contacting them (i.e., their role on this particular committee) and be aware that you will likely not hear a response from them as they prioritize their own constituents.\u00a0<strong>But before you reach out to members of the Subcommittee,\u00a0<em>reach out to your own Representative\u00a0<\/em>and urge them to demand their colleagues include restoration of IMLS funding in their markup.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The second is reported from Education Week and seems to indicate that advocacy efforts are paying off<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/policy-politics\/senators-including-republicans-reject-all-of-trumps-proposed-education-cuts\/2025\/07\">Senators\u2014Including Republicans\u2014Reject All of Trump\u2019s Proposed Education Cuts<\/a><\/strong>. The article talks mainly about the Department of Education, but does mention IMLS, \u201cThe Senate version of the budget differs on nearly all the priorities Trump laid out. In addition to all the education-specific funding allocations, the bill includes funding for several programs and agencies the Trump administration has already moved to unravel, including AmeriCorps and the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/policy-politics\/trump-admin-cuts-library-funding-what-it-means-for-students\/2025\/03\">\u00a0Institute of Museum and Library Services<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for your advocacy on IMLS funding.
