Senior Library Clerk, Agawam Public Library (Agawam)

Due to a recent retirement, the Agawam Public Library is seeking an experienced candidate to fill a full time position in our Circulation and Technical Services Department.

SENIOR LIBRARY CLERK PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:
This is responsible clerical work of considerable difficulty frequently involving supervisory responsibility and the use of independent judgment at the Library Circulation Desk. Work involves responsibility for performing clerical tasks of considerable specialization, complexity, and decision making within a computerized environment. Work is performed under general supervision and involves the exercise of considerable initiative and judgment in carrying out complex and specialized clerical, automated procedures and library policies and in making work decisions of considerable departmental/public importance and consequence. Supervision is frequently exercised over less experienced or skilled clerical employees/volunteers engaged in less complex phases of work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

•        Performs extensive public contact work of considerable technicality.

•        Answers complex and varied Circulation Desk requests, inquiries, and initial complaints by phone and in person; refers reference                 and specialized professional inquiries to Librarians and their Associates as needed.

•        Circulates materials with the computerized Central/Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing System (C/W MARS) with a            wide variety of various procedures and functions of charge, discharge, inquiry, and other computerized operations via a computer             terminal.

•        Keeps abreast of new computerized C/W MARS software upgrades by reading regular newsletters and other sources, and attending           informational meetings.

•        Inspects returned print and non-print items and notifies patrons of damage, partial or full losses and charges patrons accordingly;             may perform necessary cleaning and basic repairs, and notifies Librarians of need for replacement;

•       Assists the public in completing applications, registrations, renewals, statements, and forms and is responsible for verification of                   proper I.D. and the recording of correct information on forms and in the C/W MARS database.

•       Makes computations of considerable complexity by the computerized C/W MARS system (or by hand if the system is down or                     overwhelmed) to compute fees.

•       Performs temporary or full conversion of materials to C/W MARS machine readable format via a computerized system and deletes               items as necessary.

•       Empties library bookdrops daily to discharge items returned and reconciles patron records.

•       Sorts all returned items by general age order and category and arranges on shelves or trucks in work room.

•       Places and resolves reserve holds in C/W MARS; notifies patrons of reserves; watches for and separates reserved items, and retrieves           for patrons as required.

•       Straightens and cleans public and staff areas and notifies Chief Librarian of maintenance and cleaning problems.

•       Retrieves magazines for patrons downstairs in the stacks as needed.

•      Assists with library supervision by observing lobby and other areas to keep vandalism to a minimum; hands out restroom and other            keys as required.

•      Performs related library and clerical tasks as required.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILL:
A minimum of three years experience in responsible clerical and public service work, preferably including library and computer experience or the equivalent combination of previous experience in related fields which gives that person the following: considerable knowledge of office practices, procedures, equipment (including computer and audiovisual equipment), terminology; departmental programs, functions, policies; business English, spelling and commercial arithmetic; the ability to perform neat, detail-oriented and accurate work; to operate computers and to demonstrate mechanical aptitude; to interpret department rules, regulations, and laws to the general public; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and to deal with the public with tact and courtesy; to make independent responsible decisions; to maintain clerical records of complexity and prepare reports therefrom, and to follow instructions; thoroughness and dependability required.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:
High school diploma including or supplemented by courses in general office, commercial and computer courses or other fields relating to the duties as set forth herein, or shall have the equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties specified.
