Library Associate – Youth Services Department, Newbury Town Library (Newbury)

The Newbury Town Library is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic candidate to fill our part-time Library Associate for the Youth Services Department. The Youth Services Library Associate assists the Youth Services Librarian in planning and conducting programs, preparing crafts, locating and shelving children’s materials, helping adult patrons, and performing other tasks as required. The position also includes occasionally covering the main circulation desk and providing general library services to the public in a courteous manner in accordance with Library policies and procedures. 

Duties and Responsibilities:  Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Programming  Automated Circulation Tasks

- Assist Youth Services Librarian in planning story hours and other programs and conduct story hours under the direction of the Children’s Librarian.
- Assist the Youth Services Librarian with programs by preparing craft and other materials, operating audio-visual equipment, and related tasks.
- Perform all functions of NTL’s automated circulation system, including:
- Check out, check in, renewal
- Register patrons and issue library cards
- Process hold and interlibrary loan requests through ComCat online software
- Perform patron, title, item, and hold inquiries
- Deal with patron blocks
- Perform patron accounting functions
- Set item status (claims returned, lost, etc.) as necessary
- Retrieve pull list, locate materials, and route to destination.
- Receive and process payments for lost materials


Non-Automated Circulation Tasks – Primary

- Provide prompt, courteous, and direct assistance to all patrons regarding use of library materials, equipment, and services in person, over the telephone, or email.
- Answer the telephone and operate the intercom, answer directional questions.
- Assist patrons in locating and retrieving materials and with use of the public catalog.
- Shelve books and other materials and read shelves as necessary.


Non-Automated Circulation & Service Tasks – Secondary (as a substitute at the Circulation Desk)

- Answer basic reference questions such as locating library materials, using databases, or assisting with computer help
- Provide reader’s advisory services by recommending library materials that would be of interest for individual or book club use
- Provide coverage of the main Circulation desk if needed
- Provides direction to volunteers in the absence of the Circulation Librarian  
- Assist in opening and closing procedures
- Assist with collection merchandising and maintenance
- Assist people with booking the community room
- Assists people with booking museum passes and event registration
- Participate in collection development of a collection as assigned 
- Shelve books when needed
-Other duties as required or assigned 

Qualifications

This position requires a strong desire to serve the public, possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines. Applicants must have solid computer and software skills along with the capacity to adapt to new technology. Experience with SirsiDynix is a plus.

High School degree required. At least 2 years of college or BA/BS preferred. Previous work with children in a library or non-library setting is desirable. Experience working in a public library preferred.
