Head of Bibliographic Services, Lincoln Public Library (Lincoln)

The Town of Lincoln values workforce diversity as it strengthens performance, integrity, trust, and partnerships with our staff, boards, committees, and community.  The Lincoln Public Library is seeking a Head of Bibliographic Services to lead the acquisition, receiving, cataloging, and maintenance of our collections. This key role involves supervising Bibliographic Services staff and volunteers, while also engaging in circulation, reference, and other assigned duties as needed.

Overview: Under the general administration of the Library Director and Assistant Director, the Head of Bibliographic Services oversees the acquisition, receiving, cataloging, and maintenance of the library's collections in accordance with MLN policies to facilitate seamless access to library resources for both patrons and staff. This role includes directing and supervising the work of other Bibliographic Services staff and volunteers, along with undertaking circulation, reference, and other assigned duties as needed. This full-time position entails 37.5 hours per week, with a schedule to be determined, including one evening per week and one Saturday per month. Competitive benefits are included.

Key Responsibilities

Acquisition and Classification: Order, acquire, and classify all materials added to the collections using network databases.
Oversee data entry, physical preparation, and maintenance of all materials.
Maintain the library catalog database in conjunction with network staff to establish and maintain library-wide consistency in cataloging.
Work with periodical vendor to maintain complete and accurate holdings according to contract

Reporting: Generate and analyze reports on collection usage, catalog accuracy, budget and acquisitions, and special projects to inform decision-making, optimize library operations, and enhance user satisfaction.

Collection Development: Participate in collection development, including selection and purchasing materials as needed.

Supervision and Leadership: Provide supervision, training, and evaluation of the Senior Library Technician.
Coordinate workflow and department procedures to ensure uniformity, efficiency, and timely completion of tasks.
Supervise the processing activities of three Circulation Assistants and volunteers.

Reference and Circulation Support:  Staff the reference and circulation service desks as needed. Provide technical assistance and user support to library patrons and staff, including troubleshooting catalog access issues and assisting with research inquiries.

Library Operations: Work one evening per week and a weekend on a rotating basis. Maintain a thorough working knowledge of all Minuteman Library Network as well as LPL policies and procedures related to ordering, classification, and processing of materials. Communicate updates to staff.
Serve as a member of the library’s management team and other committees as needed. Manage library operations in the absence of the Director and Assistant Director.

Basic Knowledge: A solid understanding of library science principles, including information organization, resource management, and user services.
Familiarity with the goals and objectives of public libraries, as well as the role of bibliographic services in supporting library missions.
Knowledge of cataloging rules and standards and proficiency in library classification systems. Familiarity with integrated library systems and library automation technologies used for cataloging, circulation, acquisitions, and patron management. Ability to navigate and utilize features of ILS modules related to bibliographic services, such as cataloging, acquisitions, and reporting.

Education and Experience: Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program
A minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience in public library services, with a primary focus on bibliographic services and some public service experience. Experience with integrated library systems (ILS) and library automation

Independent Action and Accountability: Works independently under the direction of the Director and Assistant Director within the scope of LPL policies and procedures. Uses good judgment and experience to make day-to-day decisions based on principles of good patron service.
Consults with the Director or Assistant Director on major policy issues and personnel decisions.

Physical Requirements:  Responsibilities involve close eye/hand coordination, finger dexterity, and manipulative ability to ensure accuracy in using computers and other office equipment. Duties involve occasional light exertion of physical effort to lift or move lightweight materials or equipment. Work does not generally involve occupational risk.

Qualifications

Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program required. 3-5 years of progressive experience in Bibliographic Services, along with some public service experience. Familiarity with the Sierra library system is desirable.
