Assistant Cataloger, Westfield Athenaeum (Westfield)

Position Overview: 

Reporting to the Cataloger and Head of Adult Services, the Assistant Cataloger's duties include, but are not limited to, searching and/or entering bibliographic records in the CW/MARS catalog, creating brief records where necessary, cataloging and processing materials, unpacking and checking ordered materials, light repair work, monitoring of supplies and restock, deaccessioning weeded materials, record maintenance, running reports and inventory, special projects as needed, collection development as needed, coverage at the Adult and Juvenile Circulation desks, a weekly evening shift at the Adult Reference desk and other related duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

1. Catalog materials for circulation, primarily Juvenile holdings.

2. Submit materials not in the catalog to the CW/MARS Cataloging Center either via the CatCenter online request forms or through the OCLC WorldShare Record Manager.

3. Create holdings records and brief records in the catalog as needed. Request overlays for brief records as needed. Report errors to the Cataloging Center. Submit materials not found in WorldShare for original cataloging.

4. Run reports through the CW/MARS staff site or within the catalog as needed.

5. Process holding for circulation as needed.

6. Open packages and orders. Check that items are in good condition and match the order form, resolving any issues including duplicate return and credit/replacement requests for damaged or incorrect arrivals.

7. Delete and discard weeded materials from the catalog to be placed on a free cart or otherwise disposed of. Assist with weeding as needed.

8. Repair all discs using the disc repair machine, and repair other materials as needed.

9. Assist with collection management and development including ordering assistance and replacements.

10. Run reports and periodically delete lost and missing items older than five years as needed.

11. Keep an inventory of processing supplies, submit supply and restock requests to Administration as needed.

12. Order and maintain a collection as needed. Research, select and purchase library materials while maintaining a collection as needed.

13. Complete relevant WebJunction and WATH Staff Academy webinars.

14. Attend Technical Services meetings, workshops and seminars (in-person and/or remote) for the purposes of training and professional development.

15. Attend staff meetings and staff days.

16. Participate in committees and work on special projects as needed.

17. Provide backup assistance in the absence of the Cataloger or other Technical Services staff.

18. Work a weekly evening shift at the Adult Reference desk.

19. Provide coverage for the Adult and Youth Services Circulation desks as needed.

20. Perform other tasks and duties as assigned by the Cataloger and the Head of Adult Services.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

1. A Bachelor's Degree.

2. 1 - 3 years of library experience, preferably in cataloging or technical services, or coursework in cataloging as part of an MLIS degree.

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. An MLIS degree from an ALA certified program.

2. 1 - 3 years of cataloging or technical services experience.

3. An ability to adapt to emergent technologies and effective use of technology on a daily basis.

$21.41  / hour

Salary Notes

Employees with an MLS receive a bonus of $1,500 a year above the hourly wage.
