We are amused - songs and stories of victorian america
Program Categories
Music, Historical Programs and Characters
Audience Age
adults (with children ok)
This exceedingly popular program features music beloved by the society of 19th-century America. Illuminates what was important to the American heart in Victorian & Edwardian times. One of our three most-requested programs (& our first). The title, of course, is a wry reference to Queen Victoria's attributed remark, 'We are NOT amused' when passing a prudish judgment. (Formerly titled: American Victorian Parlor Songs)
A special version of this program, entitled MOTHER, DEATH & FURNITURE; THE FAMILY IN AMERICAN VICTORIAN PARLOR SONG focuses on the family & domestic life during this pivotal time. Program presented at the Sonneck Society for American Music annual conference, 1995.
