THE RUSSIAN FIREBIRD: Storytelling and Workshop
Program Categories
Educational Programs, Storytellers, Crafts
Audience Age
adultds and families with children aged 6 and up
The Firebird is a magical winged "bird of light" that appears as a thematic element in many Russian legends and fairy tales. She represents the ephemeral, elusive, and sometimes dangerous lure of unattainable beauty. A single tail feather from the Firebird can light up an entire room. Capturing and imprisoning its magical power is common theme throughout folklore and folk art. This unique cultural program is designed for adults, teens and families with children 6 and older. The program combines storytelling, traditional Russian music, and the actual painting of authentic Russian firebird whistles. It introduces adults and children to the magic and mystery of this important Russian folk image. After an illustrated storytelling presentation designed to stimulate creativity and imagination, there will be an optional & hands-on component where anyone who chooses to participate can paint an authentic Russian wooden Firebird whistle. Throughout the workshop there will be traditional Russian music, and there will be a demonstration of a few steps from a traditional Russian "Firebird dance."(There is a materials fee per person for anyone participating in the hands-on component of the program. This fee covers the cost of the wooden shape and the use of paints and brushes for the workshop.)
