In this workshop, Mister G demystifies the songwriting process and empowers children to write their own songs. He reveals the three magic ingredients of any song: a topic everyone can relate to, combined with great rhythm and a catchy melody. Using examples from his own work, Mister G illustrates how varying musical elements '” such as tempo, harmony, accents, rests, and meter'” impacts the emotional resonance of a song. Students will brainstorm a topic and lyrics, and then hear their material translated into a variety of musical styles, including funk, soul, reggae, rock and country.

Mister G (aka Ben Gundersheimer) has a Masters in Education from Smith College, a BA in English from Amherst College, and over twenty years experience as a performing musician and recording artist. A founding member of the Roots Music Collective, a Young Audiences featured act, Ben began blending his love of music and education in the late 1990s. Winner of the first songwriting scholarship in the history of Berklee College of Music, Ben specializes in promoting literacy through song creation. He combines his additional professional experience as a photographer and yoga teacher to create innovative workshops tailored to a wide range of ages, schools, and settings. As a musician, he has toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada, and his songs have been featured in television programs around the world. As a photographer, his images have been published in magazines and books, and exhibited in New York City art galleries. A fluent Spanish speaker, Ben’s workshops all contain a multicultural perspective based on his travels around the world.
