Kamishibai is a unique storytelling experience from Japan. Â The stories are presented through a traditional, built to travel, wooden "stage" using beautifully painted storyboards that the audience can view while the story is read from behind the stage. Â The stories are Japanese folktales and newer non-traditional tales, they provide awareness, insight and appreciation for Japanese storytelling, culture and art. Â The Kamishibai storytelling provides students and other groups with a positive/interactive literacy experience that can be tailored to fit specific needs and interests. Â The presentation can either be storytelling or include an additonal activity depending on what is needed. Â
A Kamishibai storytelling begins by clacking two wooden blocks and calling "No Hagimari, it's Kamishibai Time!" Â The children's eyes and ears open and they are engaged by a new story that comes from far away but often feels very close to home.
