Everyone loves butterflies, especially up close and personal. They are a medium that unlocks the heart of angry teenagers, and are able to coax the shyest of children out of their shells. When there is a butterfly release in town, people literally drop everything to attend. The day of the event students learn how to identify host and nectar plants, what Monarch eggs, larvae, and pupal forms look like; how to tell a male from female and why the males have pheromone pouches on their wings. There is much discussion on native butterflies and identifying specimens patrons have observed. Releases attract the attention of the local media, and are great publicity. I have Monarch, Painted Lady, Mourning Cloak, Eastern Black Swallowtail, and Red Admiral Butterflies this season.
At the end of the program the butterflies are released either individually or as a group.
This program is suitable for the 2023 summer reading theme All Together Now on Kindness, Friendship, and Unity.

$150.
Mileage is charged by distance from Ithaca, NY, at $0.50 per mile.
$6 per butterfly. Some libraries like every child to have a butterfly, others like to do one per family, or a group release with a set number of butterflies. I need advance notice of 4 weeks to be sure I have enough.

It is helpful to have other local libraries schedule together at greater distances, travel will be split between them, and program discounts are given based on number of libraries participating.
