Description

During the program, the presenter will help patrons plant their own square foot garden, using heirloom seeds. A 4x4 square area can be tilled on library grounds with permission prior to the program for a garden site, or an alternative will be to use a box demo garden to inspire patrons of all ages to be aware of where their food comes from and to eat local. I will also talk about heirloom seeds and seed saving, do it yourself vertical hydroponics, and environmental conservation.

Some libraries are hosting a community seed swap after the program to increase plant diversity and availability of great food for all. I think this is an AWESOME idea!

This program is suitable for the 2023 summer reading theme All Together Now on Kindness, Friendship, and Unity.

Facility Requirements

If the library is able and willing, we can plant a real garden outdoors. Advance notice required, I am happy to till up a 4x4 foot space anywhere (it takes 10 minutes with the mantis tiller). Otherwise a 4x4 foot demo garden will be provided.

Comments

It is helpful to have other local libraries schedule together at greater distances, travel will be split between them, and program discounts are given based on number of libraries participating.
