Description

This program is both an historical and concert experience.  It takes listeners on a musical journey from the beginnings of Jazz and its Country Blues roots, through each subsequent period of Jazz evolution, bringing them right up to the modern day with examples of the Blues influences—not just in Jazz—but also Latin, Soul and Rock-n-Roll!  Along the way, we highlight the characteristics of swing, simple musical forms and improvisation as defined in each stage of Jazz’ development.  Pieces by classic artists are emphasized, and introduced with some background and history of the music, plus memorable tidbits about the piece or composer (famous renditions, etc.)...a "curated concert", if you will.

I've performed at major clubs and festivals in the Greater Boston area, such as Scullers, Ryles, Johnny D's, Acton Jazz Cafe, and many others.  I've taught Jazz and Blues in the Newton Public Schools for many years, and have presented my programs at public and private venues in the area, as well.  Last year, I had the privilege of performing live on WBUR’s “Radio Boston” program to nearly 500,000 listeners, and have appeared on countless other area radio shows over the years, including WBZ with Jordan Rich (“So great having you on the show. You’re terrific!”).  I have nine CDs to my credit, and have been critically received nationally, including a 3½ star review in Downbeat in 2011.  Artists I have performed with include Patti Page, Howard Alden, Jay Geils, Duke Robillard, James Montgomery and Shirley Lewis, to name just a few…

“The Paul Speidel Jazz & Blues Duo was spectacular.  Everyone that came out of the room raved about it.  Many asked if we were having him back.  Even the staff was jamming at the Circulation Desk.  Paul is a nice guy and very easy to work with.  Highly Recommended!”  (Deborah Backman, Library Director, Hudson Public Library)

"I love to share when we come across an especially good performer and last night our Friends group hosted the Paul Speidel Jazz Trio on the library lawn.  They were wonderful.  We got lots and lots of compliments from audience members on their talent and their musical selections.  It was such a nice event and Paul is terrific to work with--no issues whatsoever." (Diane Wallace, Director, Winthrop Public Library)

"I want to pass on that Paul Speidel is an excellent selection for a concert at your library. He was exceedingly professional, bringing with him one other musician and all of his own equipment. His name attracted a good crowd for the performance, and what a great performance it was. He went through the whole Jazz and Blues catalogue, playing a song from each era, and explaining the background of each in between. The show was a great mix of education and entertainment and the audience was thoroughly engaged throughout. I received numerous exclamations of praise after the show. I highly recommend booking Paul Speidel’s jazz/blues duo at your library."  (Jessica FitzHanso, Head of Readers Services, Chelmsford Public Library)
