Weetamoo and the King is my original score of choral music with narration. telling the story of the Pokanoket Indigenous Nation from 1600 precontact through the end of King Philip's War in 1676. The story tells of a flourishing Nation of 8000 Pokanokets in 1600 (This Is Our Land) who have good times (It's a Beautiful Day, share their culture with the Pilgrims (Morning Song), but experience conflict, deceit, and disappointment that leads to war (Pokanoket War Council). Early successes in the war by the Pokanokets (Battle Reports) eventually are supplanted by defeats and the near annihilation of the Nation (76 Years, 7600 Gone). The presentation in song (reprise of This Is Our Land) and narration concludes with an uplifting look to the future of what the Pokanoket People are doing today to reclaim their heritage.
Dr. Cappers narrates the text while sharing recorded music of the songs from a previous live performance of the work.
