The Campaign against American Sign Language

Program Category
Educational Programs

Audience Age
adult

Description

The background of ASL in America, from its creation in New England, acceptance in the 1800s and suppression in the 1900s.  Then, its strong resurgence and popularity today.  What would cause influential leaders like  Alexander Graham Bell and many others to try and keep ASL out of schools for the deaf and push the idea that deaf should be prevented from marrying other deaf people?

You will be fascinated to learn the events that have caused so much frustration and anguish and then the triumph of so many over their circumstances.  It is a lesson for all of us.
