Description

Illustrated lecture/concert of the life and work of sailor, sea chantey collector, and social worker Joanna (Nan) Carver Colcord (1882-1960) of Searsport, Maine. Born at sea and raised on sailing ships, Joanna learned chanteys from her father the Captain and his crews from disparate ports. This program combines rich animated visuals of Joanna's childhood at sea with a head-back-and-let-fly participatory chantey sing for all who will. Joanna's hands-on work songs have endured for a century or more and are still vibrant in the living tradition today, where Lynn Noel has been singing them for more than forty years. Celebrate women and the sea for Environment Week, Women's History Month, and more!.
