Alive and Picking: The Living Tradition of American Folk Music
Program Categories
Music, Educational Programs
Audience Age
preK-grade 4
Traditional and contemporary folk music featuring the music of the Appalachian mountains, from New England to the southern end of the range, with its origins in the traditional music of the British Isles. Lui accompanies herself on guitar and banjo and djembe. The banjo provides a focal point for discussion of how traditional music from various sources has been combined and shaped in our country. The banjo, a truly American instrument, originated in West Africa, and was developed into the instrument it is today in the southern Appalachian Mountains through the combined influence of the African, Scottish and Irish music and cultures. The program also touches on other influences, including Inuit, Hispanic, and Portuguese/Brazilian cultures and music.
$450. Negotiable, additional $100 if Lui provides sound system. Plus travel expenses.

Lui uses her songs and her scruffy black bear puppet Ursa as a bridge to the children and their lives. The songs tell stories and tie the concepts directly into the children's lives, making them fun and accessible. Many aspects of character education are touched upon. Diversity, respect for self, others and the Earth, and the importance of individual contribution are taught both within the songs and experientially.
