Information Librarian, Malden Public Library (Malden)
HOURS: 37 hours per week. The weekly schedule includes two (2) evenings and Saturdays.
The Information Librarian works under the supervision of the Library Director, Assistant Library Director, and Senior Librarian. The primary focus is on the delivery of information services including readers’ advisory/reference and assisting patrons with the use of electronic resources. Additionally, participates in the development and maintenance of the library blog and website, and some collection development and community outreach responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS and DUTIES:
• Oversee Adult Collection with the responsibility to research, evaluate, and manage assigned portions of the collection. Reviews, selects, orders, weeds, and maintains the collection.
• Considers the opinions and requests of patrons in the development and evaluation of library services.
• Responsibilities include familiarity with library tools for emulating, acquiring, and maintaining library collections; use of electronic resources and other information technology sources to meet typical library needs.
• Conducts reference interviews.
• Supervises support staff and messengers.
• Communicates and interacts with the public, staff, and administration.
• Maintains a working knowledge of contemporary issues, trends, and technology in the library profession.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff and the public.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and ENVIRONMENT
• With or without reasonable accommodation, requires some agility and physical strength, such as standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or reaching with hands and arms up to two-thirds of the time; and ability to frequently lift 10lbs, and occasionally up to 30lbs.
• Ability to operate in a public setting, subject to quiet to moderate noise with frequent interruptions.
• Work is varied, although many of the tasks are of a repetitive nature.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience
• Master’s degree in library and information science from an accredited American Library Association Program.
• Two (2) to four (4) years of public library experience preferred.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
• This position requires proficiency in adult literature, audiovisual materials, computer resources, and other materials that constitute a balanced, relevant adult collection.
• Knowledge of reference materials and other library resources and publishing trends.
• Previous cataloging experience including substantial original monograph cataloging and reading knowledge in more than one language preferred.
• Requires a commitment to service excellence; the ability to work well with others in a team, and independently; prioritize and focus on what is critical and a commitment to lifelong learning; and ability to translate patrons’ needs and interests into effective library services.
• Personable, energetic, outgoing-individual with proven oral and written communication skills; and excellent customer service, interpersonal and problem-solving skills needed to interact with a diverse cultural community, and ability to work with patrons of all age groups.
• Ability to make and implement decisions based on library policy and procedures.
• Ability to carry out assigned duties independently, creatively, and in an organized manner; to handle details with accuracy; to multitask under pressure; to analyze library services and make recommendations for improvement based on patron needs.
• Previous supervisory skills in library setting beneficial.
• Experience working in an urban, multicultural community.
