The Rye Public Library is seeking an Assistant Library Director and Collection Manager.  This position combines your administrative and supervisory experience with materials acquisition, cataloging and processing.  Duties will include assisting with managing operations of the library and collaborating on managing a staff of 5 full-time and 6 part-time employees.  This position will combine the roles of Assistant Director and Collection Manager, to include materials acquisition, cataloging, and processing.  This is a full-time permanent position.  

The Rye Public Library has a collection of 44,000+ items, with a busy children’s department, and a robust calendar of events. The Library is open 55 hours a week, and strives to be the cultural heart of the seacoast town of Rye, NH.

Job Description (overview):

The Assistant Director / Collection Manager performs professional administrative work—requiring judgment, leadership, and initiative—alongside the Library Director. In this dual-capacity role, you will:

Provide Leadership & Supervision: assist with staff evaluations, daily scheduling, and supervision. In the Director’s absence, oversee library operations, staff, and community-facing services.
Manage Collections & Technical Services: Oversee adult materials acquisition, cataloging, processing, and de-selection. Evaluate and select new materials, coordinate bibliographic searches, and maintain electronic catalog records at both local and state levels.
Support Library Administration: Collaborate with the Director to interpret or draft policies for Board review, create monthly and annual statistical reports, manage supply orders, and monitor budgetary guidelines for acquisitions and technical services expenditures.
Engage with Patrons & Community: Maintain a visible presence in the library—on occasion providing reference assistance, circulation support, and electronic outreach. Represent RPL at community events and programming outside regular hours as needed.
Contribute to Strategic Vision: Work closely with the Director and staff to support long-term planning, outreach initiatives, and policy development. Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional development and attend library board or staff meetings when requested.
 

Qualifications

·     Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program is strongly preferred.

·     Minimum of two years of professional library experience—including staff management, or supervisory responsibilities.

·     Demonstrated experience in acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, and technical services.

·     In-depth knowledge of library classification systems (e.g., Dewey Decimal), subject headings, and public library collection development practices.

·     Proficiency with library technology: integrated library systems (KOHA experience preferred), digital resources, and mobile/library-related software.

·     Strong customer service orientation with excellent oral and written communication skills.

·     Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple tasks, and take initiative in problem-solving.
