Head of Circulation, Flint Memorial Library (North Reading)
Position Title: Head of Circulation
Department: Flint Memorial Library
Reports to: Library Director or their designee
Hours: 28 hours/week. Includes one night and one Saturday every four weeks (September – May).
Starting salary: $33.78 - $35.15 per hour depending on qualifications, with full benefits
This professional position oversees all activities and staff within the scope of circulation, assists the public in the use of the library, and works regular shifts at the circulation desk and other desks as assigned.
Responsible for initial handling of patron concerns or complaints. Ensures every effort to effectively uphold library policies is made while also being flexible enough to find a potential compromise that satisfies our patrons.
Directs all circulation tasks including but not limited to museum pass reservations and acquisition, patron registration, and billing. Coordinates museum pass program with the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library.
Trains staff in the use of the Integrated Library System (ILS) including new software releases and updates. Acts as liaison with Merrimack Valley Library Consortium (MVLC) to address issues.
Acts as liaison to the inter-library loan (ILL) company Optima, handling damaged items and delayed deliveries.
Oversees the Library of Things collection, including selecting, ordering, testing, creating instructions, and displaying items.
Participates in the hiring process of substitute technicians and the page.
Maintain and updates the library’s welcome packets. Maintains an up-to-date circulation desk manual outlining daily procedures, including opening and closing tasks, and communicates policy and procedural changes to staff.
Regularly runs reports to include unfillable holds, bad patron data, items in transit too long, etc.
Attends weekly department head meetings. Participates in workshops and consortium circulation meetings based on operational need. Ongoing professional development is encouraged and supported, subject to approval and available funding.
Performs similar or related work as required, or as circumstances arise.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree plus 3 years of experience in a library setting are required. Master’s Degree in Library Science is preferred.
Proven ability and desire to work effectively with the public. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge of current and emerging library technology, trends, and practices. Ability to set priorities and work with frequent interruptions.
