Head of Technical Services, Beverly Public Library (Beverly)
The Head of the Technical Services Department works under the general direction of the Director and Assistant Director.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
-Responsible for professional and supervisory work in planning, implementing, and managing a comprehensive program of service for the Technical Services Department. Keeps informed about issues, services, and innovations related to library technology, cataloging, and acquisitions. The work requires the exercise of considerable skill, initiative, and independent judgment.
-Responsible for overseeing the ordering, receiving, cataloging & processing of all library materials using Evergreen Acquisitions. Maintains an accurate shared NOBLE database in accordance with Library of Congress and NOBLE standards. Maintains cataloging, processing and database consistency and quality control.
-Responsible for fund accounting using the Evergreen Acquisition module. Generate reports as needed. Perform open and close of year operations in Evergreen.
-Oversee and assist in the inputting and processing of library materials. Provide original cataloging for specific collections, such as the Library of Things and local history.
-Train and supervise department personnel. Conduct regular meetings with Technical Services staff to discuss services, issues, and new ideas. Motivate and encourage personnel.
-Coordinate workflow and department procedures to ensure uniformity, efficiency, and timely completion of tasks.
-Participate in both selection and collection development for the adult collection and specific assigned collections.
-Ensure maintenance of departmental infrastructure, such as ordering supplies for the department and interfacing with vendors for library materials.
-Build and sustain positive staff relationships, collaborate with Department Heads.
-Provide friendly and professional assistance at the Reference Desk, addressing all patron requests, guiding the use of library resources, and effectively communicating with the public.
-Serve as the Library’s representative to NOBLE for technical services. Maintain a thorough working knowledge of all NOBLE policies and procedures related to the ordering, cataloging, and processing of materials. Communicate updates to staff.
-Maintain awareness of current library issues and trends; attend professional meetings, courses, and/or workshops to stay current with developments in the library field.
-Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum professional qualifications: Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from a graduate school accredited by the American Library Association. A minimum of 3 years in a library setting, with a primary focus on bibliographic services preferred. Familiarity with Library of Congress and BISAC cataloging and Evergreen ILS preferred.
