Library Assistant, Swampscott Public Library (Swampscott)

The Library Assistant performs a variety of routine tasks in support of daily library operations. Responsibilities include staffing the circulation desks in both the Adult and Youth Services Departments, shelving and organizing materials, assisting patrons with general inquiries, and managing at least one regular library program—typically the homebound delivery service.

WORK HOURS: 19 hours per week, including rotating Saturdays (September–May) and one evening shift per week. Schedule includes shifts between Saturday and Friday.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are intended as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements does not exclude them if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment.

Circulation Duties: Staff circulation desks in both the Adult and Children’s Departments. Check materials in/out, register patrons for library cards, collect fines, and respond to account-related inquiries.
Shelving and Collection Maintenance: Sort, shelve, and organize books and other materials. Read shelves for accuracy and shift collections as necessary.
Patron Assistance: Provide basic reader’s advisory and directional help for patrons of all ages. Refer complex questions to senior staff.
Program Support: Coordinate the homebound delivery service, including selection, packaging, and delivery of materials. May be asked to start or support programs such as a book group or other outreach efforts.
Clerical Tasks: Support data entry, inventory, copying, and preparation of program materials.
Additional Duties: Assist with programs, events, and other duties as assigned.
 
SUPERVISION

Received: Works under the direction of the Head of Circulation and/or designated department heads.
Given: May oversee library volunteers or pages as assigned.

 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Abilities:  Perform repetitive tasks with attention to detail.  Work effectively with the public and team members.  Ability to follow established procedures and adapt to changes


Skills:  Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication.  Basic computer proficiency; familiarity with library systems a plus.  Strong organizational skills and attention to accuracy.  Proficiency in basic clerical tasks (faxing, photocopying, etc.)
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a busy municipal library with frequent interruptions. The environment can be active and occasionally noisy, particularly during peak times or public programs.

 
OCCUPATIONAL RISK

Minimal risk of injury associated with typical library duties.

 
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical Demands: Ability to lift and move materials up to 50 pounds.
Motor Skills: Regular movement between library floors and shelving areas.
Visual Demands: Frequent reading of labels, documents, and screens for sorting and classification; limited need to distinguish color.
