Youth Services Librarian, Centerville Public Library (Barnstable)

Under the guidance of the Library Director, the Youth Services Librarian is responsible for the daily operations of the Youth Services Department. This includes collection development and the planning and implementation of programs and services for children, young adults, parents, and caregivers. The role also involves outreach to schools and youth-serving organizations. The Youth Services Librarian works closely with the Library Director to ensure the department delivers outstanding service to the community at large. This position also works as part of the broader library team to maintain a welcoming and well-functioning environment for all patrons.

Essential Job Functions:

Serve as a professional role model to staff, demonstrating exemplary conduct and service.
Foster a welcoming and positive environment for all library patrons and visitors.
Plan, coordinate, and implement engaging programs for children, young adults, and their families.
Interact enthusiastically and effectively with children and young adults in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Act as a liaison to local schools to promote library programs and services.  
Participate in local, regional, and state library initiatives, workshops, and professional development opportunities.
Work collaboratively with all members of the library team.
Provide reference assistance and support for research and homework assignments.
Offer reader’s advisory services, and instruct patrons in the use of library resources.
Design and create displays, flyers, book lists, and other promotional materials relevant to all children, young adults, and families.
Collaborate with the Library Director on collection development, website content, and promotional materials.
Assist with opening and closing procedures, circulation, and desk coverage as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Library Director.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree Preferred.
Experience working with children in a library, educational, or comparable setting.
Creativity, positivity, and a strong passion for reading and engaging with children and young adults.
Strong computer proficiency required; experience with automated library systems preferred.
Must be available for some evening and/or weekend shifts.
Availability during school vacations is required.
