PART TIME TEEN SERVICES LIBRARIAN, Robbins Library (Arlington)
12 hours per week
Hours and Schedule: 12:00-6:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday
Salary Range: $33.75 - $41.98 per hour
Definition
Professional library work providing reference and readers advisory services, responding to specific reference inquiries, setting expectations and managing patron behavior in the Library’s Teen Area, planning and organizing programs and services for teens; all other related work, as required.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of Head of Teen Services, performing professional librarian duties following established methods and procedures; works independently within a specific area of responsibility.
Supervision Exercised
Directs, assists, checks, and reviews the work of assigned pages, volunteers and other related staff.
Work Environment
Work is performed under typical public library conditions. The workload is subject to predictable seasonal fluctuations.
The employee operates standard office and library equipment.
The employee has regular contact with library patrons, town departments, vendors, and outside organizations. May assists library patrons in person and by telephone, chat and email.
The employee has access to department-related confidential information, including library patron records.
Errors in judgment could result in delay of service, monetary loss, personal injury, legal repercussions and damage to computer equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Oversees the regular operations of the Teen Space by maintaining an engaging space and enforcing library policies.
Use the integrated library system (Sierra) to locate materials for patrons within the Minuteman Library Network.
Provide reference and reader’s advisory service to teens, parents, school staff, and other adults working with teens at the Robbins Library.
Keep abreast of developments in teen programming; plan, implement, and manage public programs in the Teen Space.
Maintain records of activities, room use, and other library services.
Maintain equipment and resources in the Teen Space, and instruct teen patrons in their use; provide technical support for patrons using library technology including express PCs, wifi, or laptops.
Manage and develop Young Adult print and non-print collections; maintain materials budgets for traditional and non-traditional library collections.
Create promotional materials supporting programs, collections, and services.
Assist the Head of Teen Services with a wide variety of professional duties including liaising with the public schools; updates to the library website; creating informational signs, posters and displays; preparing book lists and subject bibliographies for teen.
May work at the Children’s service desk as required.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Master's Degree in Library and Information Science; one year of professional library experience; customer service experience working with teens and adults; teen collection development, reader’s advisory, and programming experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work with an emphasis in the area of teen services.
Knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm of and for teens development processes.
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff and the public. Ability to instruct library patrons in the use of online databases and other library services and equipment. Ability to coordinate workflow and adapt to a variety of tasks and situations. Ability and affinity for working and communicating with teen patrons.
Flexibility to adapt to constantly changing technology. Ability to troubleshoot software problems. Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, acquire new skills and solve problems.
Physical Requirements
Minimal physical effort is required to perform duties under typical library conditions; moderate effort is required to perform some duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak and hear, and use hands to operate equipment and lift boxes of books, supplies and equipment. Tasks may involve long periods of time at a computer work station. Vision requirements include the ability to read documents and use a computer.
