Reference/Outreach Librarian, Holyoke Public Library (Holyoke)

The Holyoke Public Library, an EEO non-profit organization, is seeking applicants for the Reference/ Outreach Librarian position. This position is a full-time, 35 hours/week, including every other Saturday. Selected candidate to start in January. Performs prompt and friendly service to customers of all ages and performs reference and reader’s advisory services. The Reference Librarian is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control. Performs all other related work as required.

Essential Functions:

· Assists in creating a welcoming and responsive atmosphere at the library.
· Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons of all ages, and community information with appropriate contact information
· Helps ensure safe, neat, and orderly appearance of library departments
· Enforce the library’s security and safety procedures.
· Assists with weeding and collection management of Reference and non- fiction collections, and appraising the acquisition of new materials.
· Plans programs, prepares, and presents programs of interest to the community, including individualized support services, tours, etc.
· Guides users in using the online catalogue and computer resources; analyzes patrons’ needs and evaluates materials to develop collection; educates patrons on library utilization; answers reference questions and conducts required research on difficult and complex questions from patrons.
· Collects, organizes, and prepares usage data and statistics for state and federal reports.
· Works with other departments as needed; participates in staff meetings, other community meetings, and network-sponsored workshops; collaborates with community representatives to disseminate information about the library and acquire information on community events.
· May assist in providing training and supervision to members of staff; establish work schedules and delegate work assignments; calculate and manage the money box following the Library’s policies and procedures; manage the circulation desk in the absence of the Assistant Director.
· Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

Master’s Degree in Library Science preferred; two to three years of library practices pertaining to reference and research services; experience in readers’ advisory services; demonstrated competence in technologies used by libraries; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional development certificates encouraged

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge: Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work; knowledge of bibliographic tools and reference materials; knowledge of a broad range of literature and related material; and, working knowledge of computerization and appropriate library applications.

Ability: Ability to work with library customers and staff in a friendly, efficient manner. Ability to listen and communicate effectively. Ability to perform administrative and record-keeping tasks efficiently. Ability to multitask several responsibilities. Ability to use independent judgment to assess and evaluate information requests. Ability to supervise others. Ability to learn and use a computerized library catalog system and related equipment. Ability to operate standard office equipment. Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule. The ability to speak Spanish is helpful.

Salary Notes

Pay set by City Ordinance. As a City employee, employee will receive a full benefits package.
