BiblioTemps® is an employment service of the Massachusetts Library System that provides experienced library workers for temporary placements in public, academic, and special libraries throughout Massachusetts.

Location:         Holyoke Community College Library (Holyoke, MA)

Start date:       January 5, 2026

End date:          February 16, 2026 

Schedule:         Monday–Friday 7:30am–3:30pm

Pay Rate:        $17.50 per hour

General Summary
The Circulation Desk Assistant serves as the primary point of contact for students, faculty, and staff at the library circulation desk. This position supports daily library operations by providing excellent customer service, assisting with access to library materials and technology, and ensuring the consistent application of library policies and procedures. The Circulation Assistant plays a key role in creating a welcoming, supportive, and efficient service environment that supports student learning and success.

Essential Job Functions
Circulation & Access Services
•  Staffs the library circulation desk and provides direct assistance to students, faculty, and staff.

•  Uses the circulation module of the integrated library system to check materials in and out, renew items, place holds, and register library users.

•  Responds to in-person, phone, and email inquiries related to circulation services and library access.

•  Applies library policies and procedures consistently to ensure fair and effective service.

•  Assists users with basic questions related to library spaces, services, and technology lending.

•  Supports the circulation of library technology and assists with routine monitoring of borrowed equipment.

•  Participates in mail pickup and basic distribution as part of daily operations.

 
Communication & Collaboration
•  Works collaboratively with library staff to support daily workflows and service coverage.

•  Attends library staff meetings, trainings, and required professional development sessions as needed.

•  Communicates clearly and professionally with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and community members.

Operational Support
•  Maintains awareness of current library policies, procedures, and service expectations.

•  Participates in job-related assessment and service improvement activities as needed.

•  Performs other circulation-related duties as assigned to support library operations.

Qualifications

Skills / Experience / Training Required
•  Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in a library, customer service, or public-facing service environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

•  Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.

•  Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy, service-oriented environment.

•  Basic proficiency with technology and computer applications, including the ability to learn library systems and tools.

•  Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Skills / Experience / Training Preferred
•  Associate’s degree.

•  Experience working in an academic library or higher-education setting.

•  Experience using an integrated library system (ILS), such as Koha.

•  Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Supervisory Responsibility
•  None; will guide student workers to complete circulation desk duties as assigned to student workers by the dean (or designee).

Working Conditions / Physical Demands
•  Normal office and service-desk environment.

•  Regular use of computers and keyboards requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity.

•  May require standing, walking, reaching, bending, or lifting library materials or equipment.
