Mondays & Thursdays 1:00PM to 9:00PM; Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays 9:00AM to 5:00PM; and every third Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the previous Friday off.
Definition
The Weymouth Public Libraries is in need of a professional and self-starter ready to take existing young adult services to the next level and who is interested in being a key member of our dynamic library system. We seek an innovative, collaborative, flexible, and service-oriented librarian to provide professional and technical support to teens and adult patrons. The ideal candidate has strengths in programs and services for teens, contemporary and classic teen literature, and current and emerging technologies. Our culture of “Yes!” has resulted in a large growth in programs and services for grateful and increasingly engaged library patrons and local decision makers. Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Head of Reference & Adult Services and in collaboration with the Tween Librarian. Performs library duties at the professional level in assuming immediate responsibility over programs and services for teens in grades 7-12.
Job Environment
Work is performed under typical office and library conditions. The work environment is moderately quiet. Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours. In addition, may be required to work on weekends and evenings when staffing levels and staffing situations dictate.
Operate computer and other standard office equipment. Experience working with an integrated library system and emerging technology. Familiarity with downloadable media, blogs, social media, and website maintenance.
Daily contact with library patrons, other town departments, and other library organizations by phone, in person, and in writing. Excellent customer service skills required.
Essential Functions

Provides general library reference services, reader’s/listener’s/viewer’s advisory service, and technological instruction to a diverse public, primarily adults and teenagers. Provides desk coverage for the Teen Room and Reference Desk as needed.
With the direction from and involvement of the Head of Reference & Adult Services and in collaboration with the Tween Librarian, develops a full range of teen programming including but not limited to book clubs, special events, music and arts programs. Responsible for programming from stage of conception through planning and publicity, and follow up.
Works with teen groups to stay up-to-date on current trends such as pop culture, anime, manga and graphic novel interests.
Establishes effective working relationships with teachers, school administrators, and school librarians in order to enrich teen collection and associated programs and services.
Responsible for collection development for the teen collection, as well as other areas as needed. Manages collection through reports and accepted practices of weeding.
Updates library website and social networking sites as needed to promote teen programs and services. Explores new technologies for communicating and engaging teens.
Participates in professional development to gain additional knowledge and skills, and shares new knowledge and skills with colleagues as appropriate.
Occasionally assume responsibility for closing the library.
Qualifications
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Substantial completion of work towards a master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited school or a master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited school. Public library experience preferred.
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill
Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of library principles, practices, and current trends and resources in reference. Thorough knowledge of teen literature, teen reference sources, including print, databases, and online sources. Knowledge of and comfort with emerging library/information technology skills and trends.
Ability and Skill: A strong public service commitment with excellent customer service and communication skills. Ability to provide consistent, high-quality and patron-centered service. Excellent skills in interpersonal relations, and written, oral, and online communication. Excellent organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work creatively, effectively, independently, and cooperatively with colleagues, patrons, and the community at large, especially teens. Ability to foster open communication and cooperative relationships. Must have superior abilities in the area of reference and reader’s/listener’s/viewer’s advisory. Ability to troubleshoot public computers and printers. Have a broad understanding of archival practice and digital technology-related activities. Should be comfortable with public speaking and have presentation experience.
Physical Requirements
Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing. Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed. Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with arms and hands. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 10 pounds.
