Library Assistant, Youth Services, Shrewsbury Public Library (Shrewsbury)
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Youth Services, the Library Assistant plans, coordinates, and delivers engaging storytimes, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), and other educational programs for children and teens (ages 0–18) within the Youth Services Division. The position performs a range of administrative and direct service responsibilities that support daily library operations and enhance the overall patron experience.
The Library Assistant works both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to effectively prioritize competing responsibilities in a dynamic public service environment. This role requires adherence to departmental policies and procedures, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patrons and staff. The position involves varied and responsible duties that demand a solid understanding of library services, initiative, and a commitment to providing high-quality service to the community.

● Plans, develops, and delivers engaging programs and services for children and teens, fostering an appreciation for children’s and young adult literature and promoting meaningful connections with youth and their caregivers.
● Provides responsive customer service to children, parents, educators, and other library users by assisting with the use of library facilities, resources, computers, and basic online services.
● Collaborates with local schools and educators through outreach efforts, including school visits and responding to educational requests.
● Performs public service desk duties, including circulating materials, answering inquiries, and supporting daily library operations; responsible for opening and closing the Children’s Room.
● Delivers reference and reader’s advisory support by providing factual information, directing patrons to appropriate resources, conducting database searches, and facilitating access to materials from external sources.
● Utilizes library technologies and online systems to accurately enter, retrieve, and manage information within library databases and related platforms.
● Provides guidance and oversight to library pages, as assigned, to support efficient departmental operations.
● Completes clerical and administrative tasks necessary to maintain organized and effective service delivery.
● Maintains and continuously expands professional knowledge by staying informed of current trends, emerging issues, and best practices in public library services.
● Demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness to organizational needs by performing other related duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Working knowledge of public library principles, practices, services, and procedures, including familiarity with automated circulation systems, library technologies, and information resources. Experience with the Evergreen Integrated Library System (ILS) and a strong understanding of the Dewey Decimal Classification System are preferred. Knowledge of early literacy concepts and age-appropriate STEAM programming for children and teens, with the ability to support educational and enrichment activities that promote learning and engagement.
Thorough understanding of customer service best practices, with the ability to provide welcoming, inclusive, and responsive service to a diverse patron population. Ability to interact with patrons, caregivers, educators, and colleagues in a professional, tactful, and courteous manner, and to manage challenging situations with patience, sound judgment, and professionalism. Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey information clearly in both individual and group settings.
Ability to quickly learn and effectively use library databases, emerging technologies, and standard office software; proficiency in operating library and audiovisual equipment. Strong research and information retrieval skills, including the ability to assist patrons in locating materials and navigating print and digital resources.
Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage detailed work, balance multiple priorities, and adapt to changing service demands in a public-facing environment. Demonstrated teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to work both independently and with initiative while contributing positively to departmental goals. Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuous improvement in library service delivery.
