Library Assistant, Concord Free Public Library (Concord)
Concord Free Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic and service-oriented Library Assistant to join the Youth Services team. In this role, you’ll help create a welcoming, engaging space for children and families in our vibrant Children’s Library.
The Children’s Library Assistant provides assistance and circulation services at the busy public service desk in the Children's Library. Programming responsibilities include leading a weekly storytime and participating in the staff rotation to lead our weekly children's program in The Workshop, CFPL’s makerspace. This position averages 18 hours per week with the following schedule: Mondays, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Wednesdays, 2:30 PM - 8:00 PM, Thursdays, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, One in four Saturdays, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
Qualifications: HS Diploma or equivalent, plus 1-6 months library experience. Strong attention to detail, excellent communication, and a commitment to great customer service are essential.
Hiring Salary Range: $22.69 (Step 1) - $27.12 (Step 10) per hour, based on qualifications and experience. Please note that the full salary range has 20 steps.

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Children’s Services, provides readers advisory,
program support, circulation, assistance to children and families ; explains use of reference databases;
assists patrons in answering their questions. Performs a variety of clerical and other library support
services; checking books in and out, collecting fines and ensuring that shelves are in order.
Responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under
his/her direction and control. Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of
departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative in completing tasks, particularly in
situations not clearly defined by precedent or established policies and procedures. Incumbent is called
upon to handle a significant amount of detail, each varying from the other in substance and content,
requiring incumbent to approach workload with flexibility.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

♦ Provides positive, courteous service to public and internal customers in a team-oriented
environment to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
♦ Performs circulation responsibilities; registers patrons for library cards; checks in and out library
materials using RFID and other technologies; processes reserves and other requests; processes
interlibrary loan requests; routes items in from and out to network libraries; assists patrons with
catalog searches and using technology such as self-checkout, navigating the Internet and
accessing digital media; collects funds from library fines and lost materials and collects funds from
the sale of merchandise for the Library Friends, Library Corporation and other related organizations.
Reconciles daily cash receipts.
♦ Assists patrons in locating materials in the library; performs reference work upon request; answers
patrons’ questions.
♦ Moves materials received from the network delivery of patron donations to other areas of the library.
♦ Assists library patrons with electronic and digital resources including downloadable books, music,
and other media.
♦ Shelves materials and maintains shelf order.
♦ Creates brief cataloging records and performs data entry for periodicals; sorts books and returns
them to their proper location; sorts deliveries and checks in items.
♦ Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
♦ Performs other related duties as required, directed or as the situation dictates
♦ May deliver books to homebound Concord residents who participate in the Direct to You Program.
♦ Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

and in writing; ability to effectively interact with all members of the public in a courteous and tactful
manner; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with coworkers.
♦ Intermediate level computer skills; ability to operate a wide spectrum of office equipment including
telephone, copier, etc.
♦ Knowledge of library principles and procedures; familiarity with automated library systems and
related applications; knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, forms and equipment;
knowledge of reference sources.
♦ Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment with constant interruption.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Normal office environment, not subject to extreme variations of temperature, noise, odors, etc. Majority
of work is performed in a quiet work environment, with constant interruptions. Frequently subjected to
the demands of other individuals and the volume and /or rapidity with which tasks must be
accomplished.
Operates computer, printer, video display terminal, calculator, telephone, copier, facsimile machine and
all other standard office equipment requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. Standing,
walking, balancing, crouching, grasping, pulling, reaching, crawling and stooping are required.
