Buckland Public Library Job Title: Library Director (20 hours weekly)
Position reports to: Buckland Public Library Board of Trustees
The Library Director is responsible for management and operation of the library and its programs. The Director works closely with Library Board of Trustees as advisor and participant in policy and budget development, goal-setting, planning and evaluation. Other responsibilities include: collection development, budget management and personnel administration. This position is directly accountable to the Library Board of Trustees. The Buckland Public Library is located in the picturesque village of historic Upper Buckland, is supported by a Friends group and is a coveted community resource.
Job Functions:
• Supervise, directly or through delegation, all library services, operations and activities, including but not limited to: materials selection, weeding out and overall collection development; cataloging and other technical service operations; reference, children’s, adult, young adult, and other services, including inter-library loans provided to the general public and special user groups.
• Directly oversee all operations of the library during library hours,
• Attend Trustee meetings, report on library activities, important issues, adherence to strategic plan goals, participate actively as needed in discussion and contribute ideas and suggestions during the decision-making process.
• Make policy suggestions to the Trustees. Implement and interpret policies adopted by the Trustees.
• Recruit and select personnel and volunteers, with the approval of the Trustees.
• Train, supervise and evaluate personnel and volunteers, as well as collaborate with other groups as necessary.
• Organize, manage and finalize the library’s 5-year strategic plan. In conjunction with the Board of Trustees (Trustees), design, host and submit the library strategic plan. The process identifies and addresses community and library vision for the future, provides direction for library development and serves as a base for evaluation of library effectiveness in relation to changing community needs.
• Oversee the management of library building and grounds in conjunction with the Trustees.
• Advise the Trustees in library matters and keep it informed of relevant issues and developments at the regional, state and national levels.
• Attend, when possible, regional, informational and promotional meetings and maintain relationships with the Central and Western Massachusetts Regional System (CWMARS), the Massachusetts Library System (MLS) and Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC).
• Meet for annual review by the Trustees.
Financial Operations:
• Work with treasurer to understand and adhere to the budget. Manage aspects of the budget in coordination with the Trustees, as needed.
• Research, prepare and submit with the assistance of treasurer, annual reports required by MBLC.
• Work with the Friends to assist in the preparation of grant applications.
Public Relations:
• Speak before groups and boards, as needed.
• Serve as liaison with municipal government and the community in general.
• With Friends and Trustees, plan and implement events and programs.
• Work collaboratively with other local cultural organizations and non-profits.
• Maintain library website and social media presence.
Qualifications
Experience/Skills Required:
• Educational qualification at least equal to those specified for library directors in Massachusetts Minimum Standards for Free Public Library Services.
• General knowledge of library principles and practices.
• Congenial personality and demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
• Ability to speak and write effectively and clearly.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment in decision-making.
• Intellectual curiosity and an appreciation of libraries.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment.
• Ability to occasionally lift, carry and position objects utilizing proper body mechanics and techniques.
• Strong computer skills preferred.
Salary: $24-26 hourly for approximately 12-15 hours/week, salary commensurate with experience/qualifications.
