Adult Services Librarian, Cotuit Library (Barnstable)
About the Role
The Adult Services Librarian is a dynamic, community-focused professional responsible for leading adult programming, advancing digital literacy initiatives, and supporting the development and use of the adult collection.
This role is central to the Library’s mission to serve as a hub for lifelong learning, connection, and access. The Adult Services Librarian designs and delivers innovative programs, including technology and AI-focused learning opportunities, fosters community partnerships, and ensures that services remain responsive to evolving patron needs.
What You’ll Do
Programming, Outreach, and Community Engagement
Takes ownership of adult services programming, with the ability to independently develop, implement, and refine offerings based on community needs, including educational, cultural, and technology-based offerings.
Leads and expands digital literacy initiatives, including instruction in emerging technologies such as AI, online tools, and personal device use.
Develops and contributes to the promotion of adult programs and services, including creating content for flyers, social media, and managing the Library’s weekly newsletter.
Builds and maintains partnerships with local organizations, businesses, and community groups to enhance programming and extend the Library’s reach.
Represents the Library in the community and contributes to positioning Cotuit Library as a leader in public engagement and innovation.
Public Services and Patron Support
Provides high-quality reference and reader’s advisory services to adult patrons.
Offers one-on-one and small group technology assistance, including support for computers, mobile devices, and digital resources.
Assists patrons in accessing library collections, databases, and online services.
Supports accessibility by assisting patrons with varying abilities and helping implement inclusive service practices.
Technology and Innovation
Assists in evaluating, implementing, and maintaining public-facing technology and equipment.
Trains staff on new tools, platforms, and resources as needed.
Supports the integration of new technologies into library services and programming, helping to bridge the digital divide through accessible, practical technology education.
Administration and Strategy
Tracks program attendance, outcomes, and engagement metrics; contributes to reporting and evaluation.
Assists in identifying grant opportunities and collaborates on funding proposals related to programming and services.
Participates in professional committees, including CLAMS roundtables and regional collaborations.
Contributes to strategic planning initiatives and service development.
Professional Development
Maintains current knowledge of trends in librarianship, adult services, and emerging technologies.
Actively participates in continuing education and professional organizations.
Other Duties
Participates in circulation desk coverage and general public service responsibilities as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned to support overall library operations.

Education and Experience
Master’s degree in library and information science (MLS/MLIS) preferred (or in progress strongly considered).
Bachelor’s degree with relevant library or public service experience required.
Experience with adult programming, instruction, or community engagement preferred.
Experience with digital literacy instruction or emerging technologies strongly preferred.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach as needed for library operations.
Public-facing library environment with frequent patron interaction.
Combination of desk work, programming, and off-site outreach.
Cotuit Library is a vibrant, community-centered space with active programming and regular patron engagement; the environment is collaborative, dynamic, and not always quiet.
Work Schedule
Full-time position (40 hours/week).
Includes regular evening and weekend hours.
Schedule may vary based on programming and community needs.

$54,080.00 / year
Salary Notes
$54,080–$62,400 annually (equivalent to $26.00–$30.00/hour), commensurate with experience and qualifications.
