Reference Assistant
The Thomas P. O’Neill Library at Boston College is seeking several Reference Assistants. This is an excellent opportunity for currently enrolled library and information science graduate students to apply library knowledge and reference service skills at a reference desk with a reputation for high standards.
Responsibilities
Provide excellent reference services to library patrons in person and via chat at the O’Neill Reference Desk during weekday evenings, weekend afternoon and evenings, and some holidays. Types of services provided include database and research tool selection, ready reference, basic technology support, directional assistance, and referrals. Work on special projects as needed, including the famous Answer Wall, or reviewing and updating material in FAQs and other online resources.
Summer 2026 (for training):
Preference will be given to candidates who are available up to 30 hours/week August 2026, during daytime hours: M-Th 9am-5pm, F 9am-3pm, for training and staffing assistance. Note: August training scheduled based on candidate and librarian availability
Academic year 2026-2027:
Weeknight shifts Monday through Thursday, 4pm to 9pm, starting in late August 2026, and continuing through May, 2027.
Weekend shifts on Saturday and Sunday afternoons (2pm-6pm on Saturdays and 1pm-9pm on Sundays).
Holiday hours during staff holidays throughout the year.
Expected 8-15 hours per week depending on scheduling.
This position is hired each academic year, with the possibility of renewing employment for following academic years based on budget, staffing needs, and continued enrollment in a graduate program.
Pay rate is $20.00/hour.

Qualifications
Required:
An understanding of information organization, research practices, library research databases, and library support services.
Excellent reference and/or customer service skills.
Enrollment in a MLIS/MLS program (starting Fall 2026 at latest).
Preferred:
Completion of reference coursework.
Availability for weekday daytime hours during Summer 2026 for training.
