Library Assistant, Reuben Hoar Library (Littleton)
The Town of Littleton is seeking qualified applicants for a 6 hours/week Library Assistant position in the Reuben Hoar Library. Responsibilities include the circulation of materials to and from the public through integrated library system transactions. Ready reference and reader’s advisory skills required. While primarily responsible for working at the main circulation desk, must be willing to work with all departments (Children’s, YA, and Adult) as the need arises. Nights and some Saturdays required.
Successful candidates will have a High-School Degree; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Background in automated library circulation and technical procedures, familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System, excellent customer service skills, and general knowledge of computers and the internet desired but we are willing to train. Some heavy lifting (30-50 lbs) may be required. Ability to lift and shelve books in high and low places. Position will be subject to a thorough background check.
This is a Grade 4 non-benefit-eligible position for 6 hours per week, a non-exempt position classified under the Town’s Classification and Compensation Plan. Anticipated hiring range: is $22.76-$28.43 per hour in ten steps. Mandatory Saturday work hours are expected.
Qualifications
High School Education or GED; familiar with computers, in a library, or in a public service position helpful; or any equivalent combination of education and up to one year of experience preferably in a library or public service position.
Knowledge: Working knowledge of public library operations and functions helpful.
Ability: Ability to communicate effectively with the all members of the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to understand and follow instructions and to work independently when required. Ability to file alphabetically and numerically. Ability to operate a computer and other standard office equipment. Interest in reading helpful.
Skills: Skill in all of the above listed tools and equipment. Excellent customer service skills. A high level of patience.
